sounds like a good trip. I've been doing a bit of reading lately, and by some of the pics I've seen there's no way any normal softy would make it. I've seen muddy sloshy "roads" that you'd have trouble staying upright even just walking. Oh, and guys tying inner tubes to their bikes and wading through chest high water. Don't think I'll be trying that anytime soon LOL Hey Dicko, what's the road like to your place? Any Harleys get in that way?
Hi all...I spend a shit load of time up the Cape almost every year,And sometimes up to 6 months at a time.Ive seen Harleys ridden to the tip.The roads get fixed after every wet season,And are better than many back road sealed roads for a short time. The roads do deteriorate towards the end of the year.If you leave to early into the year you will come across water at creek crossings ect.Fuel is not an issue either.Maybee the biggest gap is about 200klm between Bramwell and Jardine.
Biggest issue is stone chips on your bike.
HAHA !!!! ..... it depends on which way ya wanna go to get there .... if ya wanna take the development road pack ya panniers, pump up ya road tyres and away ya go, too easy ..... on the other hand, if ya wanna take the original route there is no way in living hell a near stock harley will do the trip ... unless ya have lots of spare bits, floaties, complete tool box, and ppl to push, alot, knobbie tyres with plenty of room between tyres and guards blah blah ... there are alot of chicken tracks around the bits where stock 4wd's just wont cut it but thats just cheating IMO ..... if anyone wants to give the old telegraph road a crack without taking the easy route i'll definately be part of the back up crew ... either that or i'll tag along behind anyway .... ok, who's in ?
I've done the trip to Cape York, but not on a Harley. I definitely wouldn't do it on the old telegraph line track. The development roads might be okay, but it'd still be damn rough and I wouldn't take my Harley on them. And I definitely wouldn't go by myself, although we did come across one bloke who did. I went in June 2010 and there was still plenty of water about, so you can be unlucky with the rain. Having said all that it's a great trip and great country, but my advice would be to grab an off road bike.
