Ok. There are many opinions on the oil, but i used stock HD E type fork oil. I've got a custom, and weigh 88kg. with the shock fully extended, and no spring in, fill till its 6 - 5.5 inch from the top. 5.5 if you weigh approx the same as me, 6 if you're a lightweight. Put in spring, entire pvc spacer if its a custom, ( there's a sheet in with the springs that tells you the std length for diff model sportys ) and button up. If you haven't taken the fork off the bike by now, make sure you measure your oil level in the centre of the tube to get an accurate reading. The oil that came out is immaterial, your springs are different etc. and HD aren't always know for following their own service manual....
tkae it for a ride, and adjust to suit your preferences. If you cut down too far, you can use 20c pieces to pack it back up.

Only use 20 cent pieces to get the spring preload/rider sag right then cut the pvc to length, as the coins take up more air space as they are not hollow like the pvc is, if you dont do this it effect the shock action. For my progressive springs (Ikon brand) 25mm was perfect for my weight (57kilos)

finally put my front springs in last night. I just used the entire pvc spacer supplied with the kit as it said it was the correct length for a Nightster. I had the bike on the stand and left the forks in the bike... The oil was drained by just undoing the phillips screw at the bottom and letting it all drain out. I didnt think to pump the fork so not sure if it ALL came out. I measured the oil using a burette... 364ml from memory with a few extra to allow for the oil sticking to the side of the burette.
The front is now firmer... not really sure how to describe it. I don't know whether I need to cut down the spacer or not....
It definately feels better, but I am not sure how to describe the difference in feeling...
