I have been looking at a few sets of pipes for my 1995 FXSTC..EV27 cam and air but the pipes I am looking at have no baffles...Is it going to be a problem or would I have to try and baffle them to get a little back pressure...

    Cheers...Sparra

should be ok mate buttttttt id run some cones up at the flange will cut bit the kakkle out and give a bit backpressure ya should have most baffles in bikes are to restrictive an the best way to tone it down a bit and to get some backpressure is to have a straight threw muffler with perforated tube NOT SPIRAL LOUVER and some glass in the muffler the one i put some piks up in the thread THINKING BOUT BUILDING AN EXHAUST is the ones ive had best results with in 2 into 1 twin pipes ive always run reversion cones (make my own in different sizes) an change em till i get the best power an noise i like on my old evos an shovels .done it on few twinkies an the blokes still happily rideing around but they only runnin 45mil pipes not 51mil hope this helps or can call or ill call you to chat

Thanks fella's...The one I was looking at kick down at the end so unless the baffle is flexable it wouldn't go in...Cones may be the way to go...

I have the VnH 2in2 Big Radius and they are baffled to a point. Loud, but not too loud. The go good too. :)

Yeah man. I have a mate who has an 08 fatty with a HyperCharger and TTS and has slash cut slip ons, and mine is so much more grunty down low. Mine has so much more go than his down low, and the only real difference is the pipes. Shit, I even think we have the same map. :)

I did read a bit on the VnH site before I bought them and they reckon the did some work to them recently to get more power for less noise. I know that if I am at a cruising speed I can roll off the throttle slightly and they are really quiet. Can go by the fuzz and not cause too much suspicion. Crack it open going up hill and they growl like a rabid dog. :)

The note itself is not as deep as say the slash cut slip ons, but I reckon it sounds angrier.

cones go in the pipe to head if ya get a set tune as ya would normally then take for ride everyone rides differently so bit hard to say wats best for you as i most prob ride totally different ya can lean the cv out without fuckin with ya pump but try cones an set carb as normal for ya engine an see from there ive had bikes evos that were rich as shit an put some cones in it toned it down an made enough restrition so the ingintion could fire an burn the way it should on my old 96 springer could get 380 k outta a tank an was round the 94hp 100t but i did run a 42 mikuni on it shouldve kept that bike now i think of it lol, but we all should keep alot of different things

in yrs past used to go to a mates shop that had dyno an watched as they done the comparisoms mongrel to each their own hey but i tried em an could notice the difference from hookers to v&h tried long shots on a mates 2007 softy an had a set hookers sitting in the shed he liked the look of the hookers an talked me into changein them over he rode home (kingaroy)from brissy an he called the next day an said he got extra 30k to his tank an had heap better down low through to bout 5k when riding .ive had trumpys heaps big bore jappas with nitros an turbos an had over 20 harleys like most blokes that swing spanners some like to keep one bike but i get bored had screamin budgie slipons on some had strait drags with nothin in em and had some weird setups like stock duece mufflers on dyna pipes off a twinkie i made fit my soft tail also had some wild cust pipes i made like the ones in pik looked more like a intestine than pipes .outta all the setups i just didnt get the kick i wanted outta the v&h pipes dont get me wrong as a setup to fit most are great an they look it too but just bit of a let down on performance overall mate sorry if it aint wat ya want to hear but i call spades spades an fuckwits fuckwits lol cheers ron

i made my cones since the 70s but can get them in most good shops will get a link an or part number for yas im a ways outta town but can most prob make some a fair bit cheaper than ya can buy em i keep 2 old sets as templates so i always got them .when ya ready to put coones in ya put ya gasket into head port an then cone into pipe an just bolt up as normal easy as .when i moved to bundy to be with both my sons i went to the local muffla shop here an got a pretty big surprise hey the bloke that owns it used to work with me in repco muffla fit in 1975 next door to the vauxhall inn in parramatta lol he had some wild nortons an honda four chops i had a old pan in ridgid frame with duo glide front so i can make or if i want his workers can make watever i want/need for a fair cost .not sure abot the wrap wat exactly ya gunna do with it (use internally to quieten? or wrap pipe to quieten?) wrap on the outside of pipes will give ya better hp not heaps but does make a difference hey
will be back later gunna see if i got some shit on cones for the thread .

beleive it or not it quietens it cause the gas can trave faster threw the smaller pipe try this if ya can if got an oxy bottle when ya turn the tap on itll come out fast bein under pressure stik a peice of 2 inch pipe over the end an turn on then try it with bit of inch three quarter will be quieter ..ive made pipes on sportys an were just drags 38 inches long barked like hell when ya backed off an kakkled heaps put cones in a because the pulse comes out under more pressure an cant bounce back it quietewns the note in biker turms bit like the bigger the pipe the less flow cause it cant spiral /flow quik enough bit like farting in a bucket lol
outta a hotrod site i saved yrs ago

Sonic pulse. Think of this as a shock wave. This pulse travels through the exhaust and at the end of the pipe actually turns around and heads back toward the exhaust valve. The wave will also pull exhaust gas back along its path and if it reaches the open exhaust valve the gases will dilute the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. Under the right (or wrong) conditions this wave will even push some of the air/fuel mixture back through the intake valve into the intake, a common occurrence with short drag pipes

•Thermal pulse. Similar to sonic pulse, this is a wave created by the hot gas exiting the exhaust valve. The thermal pulse also reverses direction at the end of the pipe but unfortunately travels at a different rate, thus reaching the combustion chamber at a different time.

Exhaust gas velocity. This is the rate at which gas travels through the exhaust system. The optimal velocity is 300 feet per minute. For the most part all stock Harley engines require a 1-3/4" diameter pipe to maintain 300 fpm. Bigger is not always better and a larger pipe will actually slow this velocity thus restricting flow

    Short Drag Pipes
Since the sonic and thermal pulses don't have as far to travel as in a longer system the wave is able to return faster, thus entering the combustion chamber robbing the engine of power. Drag pipes are tuned for higher rpm large displacement engines where these pulses can be overcome. Some drag pipe makers such as Cycle Shack offer special baffles to help tune their drag pipes. The exception would be the baffled drag pipes offered by Hooker Troublemakers pictured below. There are also the longer Hooker Rebel Drag Pipes which have the look of straight drags but the baffles and extra length help compensate for reversion by providing just the right amount of back pressure.

One trick is to install anti-reversion or torque cones. When installed inside the head pipes these cones act to repel the pulse waves as they return to the engine and alter velocity as the gas passes through the narrower passage.

    Large Diameter Open Pipes
While not plagued with the same problems as short drag pipes, a large diameter open pipe will actually restrict flow since the optimal 300 fpm cannot be achieved. The alternative is to install large diameter stepped pipes such as those from Python³ and Samson. Installing larger baffles or thunder tubes will change the velocity. Another remedy is to install a large flat washer toward the end of the pipe body. This requires drilling through the muffler or pipe and welding a washer to the end or a bolt. The washer is then held in suspension in the path of the exhaust, acting as a deflector to adjust the velocity
    Long Straight Pipes
Running long pipes without any baffles fall under the same category as Large/Open Pipes. Removing the baffle will make these pipes real loud but horsepower will suffer. Remember, bigger isn't better when it comes to diameter so stick with 1-3/4" head pipes. There are drag pipes incorporating 1-3/4" head pipes and 2" mufflers such as those made by Python³, Samson, Dyno Power, and Hooker. All have excellent offerings in straight pipe designs tuned for standard displacement Harley's. Python also offers a Staggered Dual system with a hidden cross-over, thus providing some of the benefits of a 2-into-1 exhaust
    6.Slip-Fit Mufflers
Slip-ons are an excellent choice since you retain your stock Harley exhaust pipes while adding improved performance and sound. Since the original pipes are kept, velocity and lower end torque is retained. Slip-fit mufflers increase flow compared to factory mufflers which are restrictive because of government regulations or sound restrictions. Screamin' Eagle mufflers have long been very popular, however the newer S.E. II's are quieter and more restrictive than the older versions. I've always liked the mufflers from Rush, Python³, Bub, and Cycle Shack all produce good quality slip-fit mufflers. Vance and Hines make the very popular Oval Slip-On muffler for FL touring models along with a standard performance slip-on.
Drag pipes and large open pipes look and sound "cool" but are definitely tuned for larger engines, thus giving up alot of lower end torque where most daily riders need the power. While the old-school method of punching a hole in your mufflers will produce enough noise from your exhaust to wake the neighbors, this can never compare to a well tuned exhaust system.
When installing a new exhaust system don't forget to fine tune and rejet your carburetor. If your bike is an EFI model you will need to have it remapped to compensate for the free-breathing exhaust. The most common aftermarket tuner for fuel injection is the Power Commander.

mate im not flash on the reading shit as always playin with the girls at skool lol but as i put it before the big copy paste its pretty simple .unless a bikes got atleast 116 cubes i wont run 2 inch pipes always do 1 3/4 even steppin up will change the whole way the gasses flow .gas is similar to water in flow water piks the smoothest route as when ya see it on a waterslide an gas does in most aspects it always runs on the outside of a bend as water slides the smaller the pipe the better as it holds the heat more an creates better force to the outlet .i done a heap drag cars when workin in sydney with jock mcleod RIP SCOTCH done pipes on reads fueller an mario marianis done prattys blue thunder funny car an superformance in brissys 55 chev an john paynes corvette was lucky enough to watch a proper set of tuned pipes made on reads car oops engine when he ran the donovans ..started with 5 ft of pipe with a 35 degree bend an started engine took to peak revs ecet ect an started to cut pipe at 1 inch intervals till got best hp an tourqe numbers then made the rest perfectly the same an then rerun the whole setup one time took 3 days an 5 lehgths of pipe to get it spot on

I have sent a email to M&M Mark regarding baffles for big radius, heres the reply

    Hi Mark, Happy new year.
Im looking into getting some quite baffles for my V&H big Radeus pips, I wounderd if you could supply options, I'v been put onto Thunder City Monster QQ baffles, the pips I have do not have any baffles and I'm looking at ways to quiten then down.
    Regards Bugger

    reply from mark
the vance and hinse radius pipes to have baffles in them, that being said, because of the curve in the pipe, i don't believe they are removable bro. but they are tucked up in there, vance & hines does not offer a quiet baffle for these, again, as they are not removable, and have never dealt with thunder city, so not sure how theres would work bro, God bless, mark

    great info Ol school

if ya put anything other than the correct muffla glass itll play bit havoc with the engine the glasss in mufflas is designed so gass can pass threw it if ya putt the wrap in around ya perf tube ya could kill the flow by atleast half

    Ol Skool,

Thanks for the links old mate! most appreciative for your time and effort in enlightening us (read me) re "exhaust cones". May I ask you, from your experience with the V&H pipes, what sort of low end torque are we talking about? is the improvement quite noticeable from take off and through the low end gears?

I apologies for what may seem an obvious question but this is the first time I have encountered this topic, and is of interest to me as I run V&H Straight Shots on my 09 FXST stock 96B engine.

    Cheers Paul.

as ive said an many others in reguards to pipe size v & h are to big to early if they were inch an 3/4 for atleast 18inches then stepped up to 2 inch they would be way better down low .i cant say exactly wat ya will pik up as every rider is different and every bike is from factory that why ya get lemons or freak motors ect ect but the blokes ive put cones in have said they can notice it so it must be atleast up to 5 to 10 percent better when i used to ride all the time i knew stop an full throttle lol but the design on the hooker baffles is way better than the ones in the vance n hinze on my bikes ive made my own pipes to suit the motor i build but for the small amount of money an easy fitment they are easy worth their value for the pick up ya get

all cones have an dia of 1 3/4 so they fit all evo twinkies an sporty heads
cones will benifet in yours hilly but not as much as wat ya gunna do with baffles man but you would still stop the gasses flowin back into the haead an would make the gasses exit the exhaust port better
