    Hey guys

Can you use the standard swingarm on a 89 softail if converting from 130 to 200.

Also do you need to offset the engine and tranny or can you get by with offset sprockets or pulleys.

    Cheers

    Butza

Cheapest way to do this is with hard work, Widen your swingarm,
buy second hand mag and clean polish / paint, Mudgaurd @ a
big sale... Need welding experience & good knowlwdge of mechanics.
This is a big job but with the right tools its easier.. Anyone from the FORUM
with enough balls to try the conversion for themself is welcome to use
my Frame Jig to reweld and cut there swingarm for a nominal fee
( XXXX Gold 30 packs untill your finished )..........
Same goes with the Spray booth guys if you think you can handle
the job and live in the area, should at least make good Posts for the Forum !!!
We are actually spending this weekend planning out the new Frame
Shop, Australian made, with Vin numbers and MSO's. That is if
    RTA play the game.

OK i see this is an older thread but I'll post here before starting again.

I have just acquired a wheel/disc/pulley assembley off of an 07-08 softail standard to do a 200 rear conversion on my 2001 heritage softail. Now i know i need a wider swingarm and offset at the trans. And a narrower belt too. Does any one know what (or if) year model  swing arm will fit or do i need a custom one? I am hoping an 07 up swing arm from a softail will fit. Any other hints with this would be greatly received. Also can anyone recommend a machine shop that can modify my break calliper for this to fit? (around Melb sth east suburbs or in Latrobe Valley) Looking frward to this as my winter project.

custom swing arm 08 up are 10mm wider and will not fit in to your frame , and you don't / cant offset the trans on tc mtrs they bolt to the engine
but with the right wheel, spacers ,belt you should be able to go wider but you may have to change rear guard and cut the guard struts off
tc maybe able to unbolt they don't on evos what size tyre/rim  is on it now

Yeah i knew the guards and struts would need changing. I'm going to see about a custom rear guard. I have the stock wheels on mine which are 16x3.5" i think. With a 130 tire. Hoping to be able to pull this off on a budget.

on a budget get a dyna 17x4.5 inch rim ,160 tyre new spacers for axel and pulley no guard mods or swingarm run your brakes or
    just get the wallet out

I've already bought a 17x6 wheel from a softail standard. with a 200 tire on it. (Though i will put a brand newy on before final fitting) I pick it up tomorrow.

I will find out where i can get a custom swingarm. I don't know exactly what mods need doing to the break caliper? I know it needs machining down but where and how much i don't know.

where it sits up against the swingarm and in the slot that locates it to the swingarm if you need to move it accross more

you will probley have to change bearing to as they will be 25mm or I inch bearings you will need 3/4 and make a new inner spacer too

Inner spacer? To locate the wheel in correct line for pully - belt- trans?

Thanks heaps for your advice and thoughts on this.

the one that goes between the two bearings sits in the centre of the hub that needs to suit the 3/4 bearings

First piece of the puzzle. 17x6" alloy with 200 tire. (needs a new one) pully (3/4"<img src=" border="0" src="/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/_default/emoticons/wink.gif" /> break disk, 3/4 inch bearings and the spacers for either side of the wheel.

Unfortunatley all the pics are gone but Grumpy Cycles/Dazza/Jacko88 is the man to talk too. Just send him beer for info. His info is spot on for what you are looking for. He shows how much needs to be taken off the brake bracket, spacers etc.

as Burnzi says it can be done and without any offset with that exact wheel, you just need access to a good machinist and stick a 180 on instead as its better for clearance still looks the goods cos it fills out well n the rim I used all oem parts with no dramas you will need to get a speedo adjustor from Dakota as it throws it out over 5-8kph

Thanks for the advice guys. Yeah i will have to hunt down a speedo correction for it. I am hoping to be able to stick with the 200. I'll have to just modify more i guess. My next step is to get an 07+ swing arm and see how different it is to my stock one and get planning from there. I'm trying to figure out what front wheel to run with it? I don't like the look of much bigger (21" or 23";) wheels on the front. i was thinking maybe an 18 or 19 with a 130 on it would still look the goods. (in my opinon any way)

Not sure on how it will effect the handling. Unless i just run a 17 on the front as well.

Again thanks for the input guys. I can't wait to get stuck in and do it. I'll put some picks up when i have success at fitting it all.

Mate if ya gunna use 3/4 inch bearings/ axle n stuff you want 07 swing arm

they changed to 25mm in 08,  just say'n.

OK. So the swing arm i have on now will (with modifying) accept the wider wheel with 200mm tire? Sorry i was under the impression i HAD to get a later model swingarm as they were wider...... If i can use my swing arm and just change the wheel bearings to the 1" (25mm) ones then i'll go that way.

So if i use my swingarm, shave my caliper, fit new bearing to the wheel,  use the correct spaces to locate the wheel, get a 20 belt. Then i need to address the fender struts and rear fender. And the belt offset at the gear box? Or is the pully aligned by spacing the wheel coorectly?

Sorry to be a pain in the khyber pass guys. I am just getting keen to do this. And if i can use my swingarm then i'll do it sooner rather than later!

If i can fhysically get this happening soon i'll sort out the gearing/sppedo correction a little later.

It might be easier to buy a fender and struts off a later model fatty. You could have your original fender widened to suit, but I'd rather just get another fender, less mucking around & all you'd need is for it to be painted if it wasn't the right colour or bare metal.
