Hey! Does anyone have the HD electrical specs of the ignition (EFI Sportster) coil - Primary & Secondary resistances????

    Cheers

Its a 2008! Do you know if there is an aftermarket replacement available if this one is dead?

Primary resistance 0.3-0.7 Ohms and Secondar 1500-2400 Ohms. Im not sure if there is an aftermarket one for them, i havnt had issues with mine as yet.

What issues are you having?? Any details?

Hey Andrew! Thanks for the data! I have access to a milliohm meter so I will test it.

Problem - from a little bit of investigation and elimination - the coil was breaking down when it got hot (a misfire was detected when the bike had been running and was up to op temp) - open road and a constant airstream over the coils = no probs; around town and at the lights = random misfire; idle for anything over 2 mins when hot = runs on 1 cylinder.

Not the plugs or oil fouling ( a bit of fuel fouling after idleing) but the coil - the way I found out was I used a can of eletronic Freeze Spray on the coil when it was hot and breaking down - a heavy spray and it fired on all two - took it for another blast and then let it idle - breaking down again - another spray and bingo, fired on 2 again.

So I have either shorted 2ndary windings when hot = weak spark or open secondary windings when hot = no spark or open primary windings when hot = no spark. Shorted primary is likely to drag excess current and pop a fuse.

So I am going to rip off the coil and measure it cold and then throw it in the oven and take it up to 80C and see what happens to the resistances.

    Regards

    Chris

yeah it is SJ, also resistance always goes up with heat

I don't think the temp transmitter located in the rear cylinder on my sporty does anything but provide eng temp data to my Thundermax (to adjust timing, idle speed, AFR etc - definitely doesn't shut down the rear cylinder if it gets hot!) Not sure where you got that from!!!! - If the engine temp gets over the 410 degrees setting then the engine warning light illuminates and my idle drops to 800rpm (because that's where I set it !)

Yes! The oven test determined an open circuit in the secondary windings when it got to about 78 degrees C - Got hot through the oven gloves when testing and when cooled back down to room temp there was a circuit again - heat expansion/contraction failure!!

Anyway a new coil is the way to go!
