Fire it up and ride it.
No need to over rev it
No need for wide open throttle till ya feel happy it's freed up. (maybe 1000 K's or so)
Don't lugg it, (ever)
But most important, don't be to soft on it first up. Give it some poke in second and third so as to put plenty of combustion pressure behind the rings and ensure they bed in good and propper.
Vary the speed and the load.
Ride it for as long as you can first run to keep the temp at operating levels, but remember she's air cooled and ya don't want it overheated.
If ya can, plan a long run straight up, say 500 to 800 K's then dump the oil. Then the same for the next run if possible.
(some folk like to dump the oil earlier, that's up to you, but with todays lubricants and machining tolerances I reckon 500 to 800 is more than OK if ya doing a single run straight up )
By then all the high spots should have definitely been dealt with and the rings and cylinders should be Micky Mouse.
That's my line of thinking for an engine that I want to last and gives best performance.
Ya run it in right and there's no reason for any donk to burn excessive oil.
Lugging, putting undue strain and loads on due to being in too high a gear at too low an engine RPM.
Bang-Bang,,,Tends to hammer the main, big and little end bearings, and con rods, as well as placing undue strain right through a drive train
Better for the donk to be reving a little higher in a lower gear, rather than too low in a higher gear .
first thing i got was an lcd temperature oil dip stick and kept an eye on the temperature
then i fitted a tacho and babyied it abit under 4000 for first 500km, bit of clutch in pulling up ,and keep away from town abit, then the temperature drop told me i can cane it, changed oil first
and if you got the se260 cam the heads will make more noise, and you have to ride it a bit harder
Wishes someone had told me this sooner.
