There are way too many accidents involving motorcycle being hit from behind, people need to watch what there doing out on our roads.

Fact is ... the most common accidents are rear enders ... not good for us bikers, it can mean a life in a wheel chair, most of the time i will stop level with the tail light of the car in front and give myself enough room for a bail out, as soon as i start to brake i watch the mirrors until the second vehicle behind me has stopped ... not gunna save my arse in all situations but dramatically reduces the risks.

Copping two tail enders in the car in quick succession made me give this a lot of thought. Here's what I do now. Not rocket science I know but easy habits to get into:

    1. Stop sooner so you have room to be pushed forward or maneuover in

    2. Tap the brakes to flash the lights until you see the car behind has come to a stop

    3. Only hold the bike with the back brake so you can steer if bumped

    4. Stop to one side with the bike facing the exit to one side or another of the car. If there is oncoming traffic in the lane to your right you would pick the left side of the car.

I do this as a routine now and it's second nature. Easy to do if you get in the habit of always assuming the car behind won't stop.

Good reason to make lane splitting legal

I've been hit from behind. Lucky for me it was only a light tap.
I was sitting at the head of a right turning lane on a red light by myself, watching the lights and not my mirrors then .........tap.

Should have seen the look on the dumb bitch's face when I put the stand down, got off my bike and started to walk towards her.

I've been lightly hit from behind (enough to tip the bike over) and I was ok but I was lucky, a mate got hit from behind and he's still in a wheel chair with one of those metal frames on his ankle 6 months on.

Ever since I was hit I try and lane split to near the front of the cars at the lights or at far least enough so that any cars not stopping will hit another car and not my bike.

I was hit from behind by a numpty mate doing about a buck twenty on a bike. weirdest feeling ever.

So was trying to pick up the bike afterwards with the right hand side of my body not working.

I always try to point my front wheel towards a safe zone - between the cars or towards the side of the road etc - and I watch my mirrors with the bike in 1st gear. That way if some twat comes at me I have a chance of getting away.

Yeah and the person in the in front probably blames the rider, lets face it , we could be wearing all that fluoro shit, and have a flashing orange beacon on our helmets, take a closer look that bike is a lot shorter than it was when he was riding it. I hate to say it but she would have hit the car in front anyway, the bike just cushioned the blow a bit, and where were the brakes locking up on the car, even ABS squeals when heavily applied. My 2 cents worth, probably on the phone and had no idea what was going around her.

Yeah the missus and i were taken out bigtime , rear ended by a four wheel drifting outa control tarago van , cunt left us both for dead on the side of the road unconscious the maggot ! Both knocked stupid , i was pile driven into the road , bleeding from the ear , choking on blood and going into cardiac arrest and they found me missus in someones frontyard 20 odd feet away , lucky we didn`t go under him i spose , had a great full day ride otherwise , had been up bells and Mt Panarama and where about 500mtrs from home when it happenned !
Always cautious now , especially when sitting exposed at lights or in stop`start traffic , expect the unexpected they say , though i heard the lockup and seen this cockhead in my mirror just before impact , there was no way i coulda got outa there , just too quick , sometimes ya just gotta put it down to being in the right spot but at the wrong time hey !

That happened to me last year on my 250, fortunately, all that happened to me and the bike was some  minor scratches.

I was going to fuck his car up with my helmet though, good job i calm down quickly.....

Just shows you, even  "dear sweet old ladies"  can be dangerous or lethal cunts behind a wheel   :(

Thats why i love the pipes on my  harley and proudly wear  "LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES" on the front of my jacket.

Good case for legal lane filtering if you ask me. Nothing like a few cars around you to soak up the impact.
