"the ECM ll not change for different fuels put into the bike"

    Good morning fellow Tuners,

Guys, I have hit a stumbling block, the "Subject Topic" above was a quote from Steve Cole, ( I download and print/file ALL snippets of value for immediate and future reference), and I was under the impression that the ECM did infact after the final Vtune process allow for this.

If this is not the case, and as Steve Cole quotes that this IS the case, what do I do to ensure that I am in fact tuning my bike to the current fuel.

I always use RON 95, although not always from the same Servo and nearly always not from the same pump. The Manual (Bible) expresses the subject in terms of "Lambda" which is not helpful as my cals are AFR.

I am retracing past steps in the Vtune process and cross referencing with forum notes to ensure that I have not missed a step which can happen and when it does it bites hard.

If I am not on track feel free to straighten me up.

    Paul

As with anything there are limits that things can adjust for. The ECM once tuned properly can learn adjustments for SLIGHT fuel changes but that's about it. So if you tune for one type fuel yet run a different type you may get into trouble. The point here is there is no one size fits all answer. If the ECM could adjust for all types of fuels there would be no reason to tune the bike would there? We all know that's not true so that was the reason for the answers I've given before.

As Stix says, don't get to hung up on finer details. Keep it simple @ first till you get better @ VTuning etc.

Your right! I am getting a bit precious with the finer things, good to confirm that this is not a big concern.
I appreciate the feedback, thank you all.

Is there any advantage operating 98 over 95 RON

I have always used 95 RON because this is what the"owners service manual" stipulates for 09 FXST's, however on the occasions that I have been to fro over the Nullabor, I have been forced to administer the "Ultra" 91 RON (Border Village never has premium) I have not been able to detect any difference at the times I had to use it due to the adverse and different riding conditions that I encountered on the four separate occasions.
I am sure that HD have insisted on 95 RON for very good reasons, but experience tells me that a mix of half a tank of the lighter grade now and then will not do adverse damage, its not ideal but some times you have no choice.
However for the purpose of Vtune I personally will be applying all the"controls" that I can apply and consistent fuel grade is one, I was concerned about Vtune variable parameters, but this has been allayed.
I should add that on a return trip from the Newman bike show this year, the fuel stop about 200 from Meekathara (I cannot think of the place's name), did not have premium, and one of the lads in company administered a small portion of "octane boost" to maintain his fuel grade.

I can answer the results of that test other than we do not get fuel that good here state side. Ours are 91, 89 ,87 octane. If you tune a bike on 91 and get it dialed in it will produce about 3 hp greater than the same bike tuned on 87. Now if you are tuned for 91 and get stuck with on 87 it will ping and loose power at mid to heavy throttle. Now do the reverse and use 91 in a bike tuned on 87............ you get no more measurable power on the 87 tune but the bike does not ping when you pump in 91 to the tank. One other thing is the 87 octane tuned bike will typically drop about 1 - 2 MPG over the same bike with a 91 tune and 91 fuel.

    Steve,

Thanks for dropping in and clarifying this subject, when you mind map a quantified answer it becomes a bit easier to comprehend.

    Paul.
