"Correct" Brake fluid level.

OK, I have replaced the brake fluid in a few bikes including mine (07 softy). Always use the manual and the indicated correct level of fluid as seen below does not relate to real world. The rubber gasket and volume compensator that is inside the master cylinders is not indicated or refered to in the manual until para three below where it just says install. If you try to fill it to the specifiec level then install the compensator the fluid will overflow!  Question to all is. When filling your master cylinder(s) what amount of fluid do you put in (measurements as detailed below in the service manual)?  Or am I just an illiterate fool and don't see what i'm reading?

Heres an opinion, not a recommendation, or professional guidance (we are talking brakes here).
I run the level a lot lower. This prevents the lids leaking. If the fluid is present at the seal level, it seems to leak. If it is just splashing near there, it seems not to.
Clearly, you need enough fluid for the brake to work.
    Thats just what I do.

Thanks Mate. I too run a lot less than the recommended fill level for the same reasons you state. I was just wondering what level you all run. Thanks and keep em coming.

When I change or top my fulid, I didn't actualy measure the amount, just fill to about 4mm below lip and sit rubber gasket and top on, tighten to just firm and you can't wriggle the top. I don't over tighten too much, I find that it squashes/distorts the rubber gasket which than it leaks when you are out riding (never at home), I don't have a torc wrench, I use wrist guessametrics. After a few time you will get the feel for it.

hi i clean the top lid seal  with metho & a clean rag inside & out as  damp &water collects there & pull the boot back home proper  make sure the top of the m/ clyinder is nice & flat  & inside the lid for a good tight seal then you won't have to tighten it way too hard & stuff the seal up ,

because most h/bars are on a downward angle anyway no mater how full

Check out Wingy's photo in this previous thread......http://www.hdforums.com.au/Default.aspx?tabid=71&forumid=24&tpage=1&view=Topic&postid=339199

Level with that circular flat part of the casting is where I fill mine.....with no problems.
