hi my mate just got a 1984 fxr its been sitting for about 8 weeks when he strarted it fired up run good but oil was pissing out of the over flow hose a lot of oil came ou,t a lot of oil ,any one know whats going on why this has happened thanks

Dont panic, common problem with the old motors, leave them sit for any longer than a week and the oil drains from the oil tank to the bottom of the motor, when started you've got lot's of oil trying to go places it wont fit, so it blow's it out the oil breather ...... beats me why it cant be directed back to the oil tank via a pressure valve or something but i know nothing about harley motors.

 hi , check oil level 1st if it's too low don't put too much in to top it up as when it pumps the oil back up that has wet sumped  it will over fill keep a very close check on the level  when running up the engine , if you going to run her longer than 1-2 mins put a fan on the engine so it wont over heat the heads , take her for a good ride  about 20 mins  then check the engine breather for any leaking it should be good  then ride for  another 20 min's , it's only  wet sumping   if you over fill it then it could blow the filler cap off & spew oil everywere

On the subject of "wetsumping"? Is this a problem with the older Harleys or can it also happen with the current V Twins also??

Is there anything that can prevent this from happening except from regular riding? Like if the bike is not used for a few weeks while being away. I don't want to have to drop the oil out if I am away for a few weeks........

I have never seen it before so I can imagine it would make quite a mess. What's the go after it happens? Clean up the air cleaner or buy a new one???

  EVO sportys can do it  also shovels & EVBT , but the twin cam is good
