I've just had a week on the road, I carried a small tent that I got at BCF for $50. It paid for itself the first night I didn't have to pay for a motel.
I would just ride till I got tired, then stopped at the next rest area I saw. Actually the last few nights I didn't even bother setting up the tent, I would just sleep on a tarp on the ground beside the bike, or on a table under one of those little shelters. I was really lucky with the weather, if it had looked like raining I would have set the tent up for sure.
Actually, next time I'm going to look at some kind of minimal tarp and rope setup to tie to the bike. Something that folds down really small and light. Then I could carry something better in the way of mattress/pillow. I think that would make things more comfortable.
If with wifey (which is all of the time now) in motels, only ONCE did she "camp" with me (10yrs ago & still complaining). But before she was on the scene, a hootchie and a wool blanket, thin sleeping bag with a few tools to make/prepare site/bed (and a good fire). Miss those days... not enough to go back to them though... do enjoy waking up without ants and other wildlife sharing my bed.
No choice now the legs are bent and buckled -- motel. If it's a long one we take the motorcycle camper
Motel all the way, getting to old and to many aches and pains to do the camping thing anymore and if you go away with a few mates split the cost of getting a motel room, and it pays for itself when you are sleeping in a nice warm dry bed when it's pissing down rain outside like what happen to myself and a few mates on a overnighter last year thank god we wasn't camping on that ride.
Kinda depends
If there are a few of us and the weather is bleak we might chip in for a room & pile the swags in.
Generally, an overnighter is the swag only (which has a sleeping bag and pillow wrapped up in it) :
ps: the "blue thing" tied on the back is one of those shopping cooler bags - makes a great fold up esky for when you get where you're going
Recent longer trip was swag and cheap arse two man tent to have somewhere to get changed and stow gear when we were looking around :
Doesn't really matter - as long as you're getting out and about I spose . .
Philthy
Take a swag / tent then you have choice, particularly of its lookin like rain.
But I prefer park cabins, pubs or as a last resort , a motel, over camping.
But places like Thunder West (VVMC) and the like; there is no choice - so I throw the tent up.
I need a new tent before Thunder West.
Just noticed Aldi (NSW) has a small four man tent for $50 commencing on sale 7th February.
It is a dome tent with Tent size is 240 x 210 x 180 high.

Plently of room to store gear and roll around.
