Hope you are all having a good new year,

I was told the front pulley and belt on the secondary drive had been changed before I got the bike and they both look like new, I was just wondering how long a belt should last on a 85 FLHTCL as I have only ever had older chain driven bikes before

    Cheers,

    Bourkie

The only issue with gravel is if you get a stone between the belt and pulley, they can be cut which may cause the belt to fail. They are not rally expensive to replace as an item, the cost is the labor and time it takes, especially on a softail.. I think someone was quoyed around the $1500 mark for a softail....

getting to the belt is not too bad on my FLHTCL as when the bike was traded in in Washington they replaced the pully at Legend Harley so when I got it the primary leaked Luckily as when I riped it down  I found Compensator nut had to be undon with 6 foot bar and heat, chain tensioner was laying in the bottom of the housing (so no fucking tension and lots of rattles), clutch was tensioned with fingers, oil seal was in backwards (they have a fucking sign that says oil side on the seal rubber), pully nut was done up finger tight and allen screws for the locking plate undid with my fingers, so when the belt goes it should be about an hour & 1/2 job if I am at home
