G'day all,
I need to replace the wheel bearings on my '86 FXR. I have never done it before, and was hoping someone can give me some tips or pitfalls to watch out for maybe? I have the Manual, but am not sure if the spacers I need to use for adjusting end play are still available for a 25yr old bike and how many spacers of different lengths wouls I need to get before I start.
Also, while I am doing the job, would it be worth changing to the later model sealed bearings or not? Are they better or not?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Your local bearing supplier should have all the shims you need. Assemble, measure up and then buy what you need.
Same as any job, make sure you prep with all the tools you need and a clean place to do the job.
If your sticking with the original type of bearings, keep it clean, clean, clean, and use the best possible grease you can buy.
My reccommendation for grease is the Nulon extreme with PTFF, had really good results with this stuff on whatever I use it on.
Benefits of converting to the sealed bearings are less mess, ease of replacement, and once set up, less time to replace.
If you do convert to the sealed bearings, it pays to pop the seals and make sure there is plenty of grease added, again, use a top quality grease to pack them.
If you're not happy with popping the seals, the alternative is to buy a grease needle from the local Auto parts shop and inject the grease that way.
(Slip the grease needle between the seal and bearing.)
Personally, I prefer the sealed bearings, but I still check and lubricate them with the above method.

Just fitted a set to a 84 sporty and my sons HZ ute.
Cant buy spacers for the 84 sporty anywhere. so had to turn one up.
Thanks for the info guys. It helped a lot.
