Hello everyone i have an 86 evo 883 sportie and want to modify it some.

I will give a bit of a rundown on the bike,i imported it from the U.S, looking

to turn it into a bobber, turns out the bike has less than 7000 miles and

is in mint condition and original besides some expensive cosmetic extras

they guy put on before me.Ie.-eagle mirrors, saddle bags, chrome eagle battery strap

and various chrome add ons, plus an S&S shorty carb and some slip on slash pipes

as well as the stock mufflers. The bike runs like a champ and is actually

quite powerful as it is.I can't justify ripping into it like i wanted to originally

basically because of how good nick it's in.But i want to make it my own.

I am saving for a 1250 big bore kit from nhrs, but my question for you guys is mostly for

cosmetic stuff.Firstly a bobtail fender, alot of people want a fortune for these things,

harley has a kit for one,for a sportster with the struts but they want far too much.I'm thinking

of getting a second hand one from somewhere and just modding it to fit with my

standard struts.I may need the light and everything aswell. If anyone has done this

and can shed any light on the subject it would be very much appreciatted.

I plan on painting it black and getting some smaller indicators for it,some drag bars, forward controls,

and little things like that,if anyone has a bike like this or any ideas or opinions

i would be keen to listen.Actually before i forget,i was told it might

be possible to convert it to belt drive,i will do some more research, but again

if anyone has done this i am super interested.

    Thanks in advance.

don't waste you time & bucks on that model sporty  from 1986 too 1990 were the bad years for trouble on XL sporty's  ,  try selling it before you spend ,  & buy a 1991 up 5spd model you won't look back & say oh shit ,

Thanks for the reply daddyracer56,but i have this bike already,it's my first harley and
i'm keeping it regardless.I appreciate your advice and understand the later model bike
is superior to mine, but i have grown a fondness of it i'm sure many of you can understand.
I would like a 5 speed but in all honesty i just want to have some fun with this
and in a few years i will flog it off and get a softy or a dyna.

I wont be converting it to belt drive, not worth it.I'm looking at doing a cheap bobtail fender
and painting it black, for my first steps.I want to get rid of the front cast wheel and get a spoked one,
these will be my first mods along with the bore kit.

Anyone else want to chime in,i'm interested in ideas and peoples point of view.
    Ta. :)

hi, i know what its like 1st harley , i had my 1st sporty for 10years & did a lot of mod's ,  but on the 1986 -1990 4spd models there was a few design faults inside  that can be a pain, maybe leave her as a 883 she will be less stress & maybe last longer , rather than put more power into her  these models arn't getting any younger

Daddyracer, howyagoin first off!  As you know, I have an 86 1100 Sporty. The one with the broken off end on the crankshaft? The job we spoke of repairing it,would that repair job on the crankshaft  bring it up to scratch with the 1990 + models?Or would we be talking about other parts of the eng as well. As in, after the crankshaft is repaired, what else should I do?( while the motor is split anyway),without going beserk.Mild mods cool. If the motor runs more efficiently with minor mods I'll go that way if ya recommend it.  I heard yrs ago that the heads on the 1100 models were designed by Jerry Branch?   PS:What do you know about J model motors

These PM's are a pain in the arse. I get a blue box on the side "You have unread messages" I access them which rarely works and it says "Mail has been read." Double click right click every way imaginable and SOMETIMES it works wtf. So now ,as usual, my mail has been read, but I never saw it, AT ALL!!!  It has never worked properly at all, ever. Mate, just send messages straight to geoffphilp@westnet.com.au  and be done with it. Thanks.

hi,  after the crank upgrade on the pinion shaft is done the motor will be o.k.  some cams would be good  ( andrews ) V4,V8 or faster one's the V6 will drop straight in as all 500 thou valve lift , 1100 heads are the go as the valve size is the same as the EVO -1340 80 cuber  i hold the drag time on a stock cv carb sporty @ 11.4 sec's @ 118 m.p.h. with the 1100 heads on a 1200 ,  you will have to fit a early model countershaft  in the g/box as this was shit from 1984 to 1990 you fit a 1952 to 1983 countershaft + the low  1st gear as well  thats is what harley also sell as & upgrade  they do not sell the 1984 to 1990 shaft @ all  it is that bad,  do not use the stock shaft as you will be asking for trouble , the only other shit design left is the alt behind the clutch but your stuck with this  no clutch hub main nut  just a c'clip , have you started on her yet ?
