I thought it would be of interest to post this vid I took of my bike with Cycle Shack slip on mufflers.  I got these off of US ebay delivered for $300.  They are good pipes but were just too loud for me.  They gave my 883 a hell loud rumble though, I was pretty impressed that the 883 could make such a noise.  Anyway here it is.

Never trust a woman to take a good video.  I wanted her to keep filming as I took off but she cut the bloody thing off.  Anyway you can imagine how loud they were because that vid is just at idle!

I know what you are saying about being too loud. I was looking at a set of Vance & Hines pipes for the softail. Apart frpm costing about $800 tp $1400 (depending on where you get them) they were just way too loud. I know alot of people think ya can't get loud enough, but with working shift I would have very angry neibours and missus in no time.

The Screaming eagle pipes have a very nice deep sound which is loud enough.

I had them on for a week and the wife would jump at the back of the house when I started the bike in the garage and I got filthy looks from the neighbors.  Plus I'm sure it would be just a matter of time before I got pulled over by the cops.  The SE street performers are good loud enough to make good on the crappy stock sound but still comfortable to the ear.

I don't think it is the volume from the pipes that is the problem,I think it is more the sound they make, some pipes have a loud deep rumble and sound good, some make a real crackle and are quite offensive to the ears. That is what you find when the baffle has been removed or they are shotguns with no baffle in them, they dont sound good at all.On the other hand I love the sound of my V&H mufflers, these were the 1st set fitted to an 07 in OZ ,Love em

Have heard mostly good things about the V&H pipes, I was seriously considering getting the Short Shots for the Sporty because I like the look of them but was put off by Peter Stevens who said I'd probably need a fuel tuner with those.

They're great looking pipes almost bought these instead of the Cycle Shacks. How loud would you describe the sound are they neighbor friendly?

That sounds good. I know the V&H pipes come with optional baffles so I think they might be a bit quieter than the Cycle Shacks.

I've got the short shots on Piglet and yes they are loud.  Luckily I live on 5 acres however, my girlfriend can hear me leave and can follow the noise over 3km away!  The power commander was a must and makes tuning a breeze.  With the short shots I do have a lot of back fire when decelerating (off the gas) but its fine once the engine is hot.  With the SE air cleaner and S&S I got 54.5hp on a dyno run so compared with stock it made a big difference.  On advice from the local tech I am looking to take the baffles out and cut them in half.  This allegedly will cut back the backfiring which will keep the horses happy.  Who knows.

They sound about as loud as the Cycle Shacks from what you describe. Good thing about the SE SP mufflers that I've got is power wise I didn't notice much difference between them and the cycle shacks but the noise is heaps less. 54.5hp, that's fantastic for an 883, that's almost the hp of a stock 1200 I think they're around 60 stock. Did you fit the Power Commander yourself?

Cutting the baffles will no doubt make it louder I'd say.

No, I pay proffessionals to do stuff that I dream up.  In relation to the baffles...Yes it may make them louder (when on the gas) but the speed you twist the wrist and gear selection can minimise the overall effect. What I am trying to eliminate is the backfiring.  It scares my neighbours hourses, cattle, ducks, geese, sheep......and vietnam vets.  Of which there are many.

Don't know how it would affect performance but I've heard of people wrapping the baffles in fiberglass sheeting to reduce noise. You might want to look into that if you end up cutting them.

Just installed (by the bike shop) my new cycle shack pipes ,
SHIT.......... Im actually partially deaf due to work hazards, but jesus theyre loud.
Ive scared children and mothers / grandmothers and actually feel a little guilty even though they sound f'kin great.
I coast my baby in neutral until im down the street before starting her up.
Im thinking of selling them with less than 100ks on them coz i know its just a matter of time til the yellow sticker leaves its sticky glue on my frame somewhere ! (sideways no doubt) !

They sure are loud, you can't really appreciate how loud from watching videos of them when you hear them for real it's a whole different sound. I heard that some people have taken theirs to a muffler shop and had fiberglass sheeting installed in them to make them more quiet. I switched mine over to the Screamin Eagle Street Performance mufflers, while they are a little on the quiet side they still give a reasonable performane boost. A good way I heard them described once was like this:

    Stock: 1
    SE SP's: 5
    Cycle Shacks: 10

    Jim,

No dramas I'll make another video of the SE SP's. I actually bought my SE mufflers from Peter Stevens in Adelaide, I though their price was pretty reasonable.
From memory I paid around $500 for them.

Hey all, After less than 100k's with the cycle shacks, ive decided to sell them and get some V&H pipes.
Not because i dont love the awesome sound (and jim, they dont give you a headache after riding)....
Its all about location location location !
Unfortunately, i live in a built up area , and only ride around the cbd most of the time to get from a-b, and have scared a few mums n kids on the way, so....as much as i hate to , they have to go. AArrgghhhh

I had Screming Eagle Pro on my 883R. Two into one's are good cause they improve low down performance and are not too loud.
