Over 200 jobs will be lost as Harley-Davidson shuts down it's Adelaide wheel manufacturing business and heads to China.

South Australian Trade Minister Tom Koutsantonis said the decision of the motorcycle manufacturer to close its subsidiary, New Castalloy, at North Plympton in Adelaide's southwest was unfortunate.

"To tell a group of workers before Christmas they may not have a job is insensitive and I think quite silly," he told journalists in Adelaide on Thursday.

Koutsantonis said the company had given no indication to government of the closure of the facility over the next 12 to 18 months, which will see 212 jobs lost.

"From now on Harley-Davidsons will be made in China," he said,

"What Harley-Davidson have done today, they have taken their operations somewhere cheaper with lower environmental standards."

    The moco are being mofo's

Strange that they have a loss about their policy of exporting parts to us from the US and then they shutdown one of our industries.

    Yeah yeah coincidence..
the moco is as popular as the Hog group with some old school crew. Corporate image and corporate greed.
Shame on the cunz for arseholing the best wheel making shop on the planet.
They may as well buy the Samsung plant and re-tool the fucker.

Just read the news, one frase that caught my thoughts

"SA Employment Minister Tom Kenyon said workers would be given between $3000 and $5000 each worth of job training.

'The state government stands with these workers,' he said.

'There will be places for them once we've got them through the right training.'"

Not sure what the factory actiually did but I did hear one of the issues is the ability to do quality chroming in Australia due to many of the chemicals required for quality are banned for use.

The saving of closing down the plant will save the company 9 million dollars.

OK simple math, 200 employees at an average wage of $45,000 a year equals approx.... wait for it.... 9 million! Nasty nasty move HD... Could've waited until feb or march, give families a decent christmas rather than not know where the next pay cheque will come from...

I myself have been through losing my job twice, once due to a company closure and then the second was six months later as the business was sold and they shut our workshop down to consolidate operations.

How on earth can 're-training' occur when you have people with plant operating skills and no new workshops opening in SA. Australian manufacturing is fooked! I was involved in manufacturing farm machinery and everyone i knew in the business sees the same trend.
