Hi I would like some info on touring the states from Las Vegas to Sturgis South Dakota.. Which is the best way for sight seeing along the way places you have stayed overnight etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated...
We are not looking for an organised tour we like to do our own thing..
A good friend of mine Eddy runs a bike tour company that does exactly that, I am certain that he does that particular run to Sturgis every year and I think the costs are more than reasonable. He will organise everything from plane tickets, to bikes and accomodation. If nothing else he is also a bloody good bloke that always has time for an ale or two along the way. Might be worth speaking to him.

Hey Trev, lifes too short to be worrying about such trivial things, enjoy it while ya can,,, DO BOTH !
All the above is good advice, and from the other thread, what Red and Annie say is spot on.
Any longer than three weeks and what you loose on re-selling a bike should be far less than the cost of a rental.
Talk to a dealer in LA or San Fran about a buy-back deal, they're keen to do business right now and you should be able to strike a good deal.
If you're looking at a rental, Eagle Riders now do a lease plan that works out much cheaper than daily/weekly hire. Think it's a monthly set up.
If you're a HOG Member, check out their rental plan through local dealers, I did one of those on a recent trip and it worked out a lot cheaper than Eagle Riders. Late model bike and great service to boot, service as good as if not better.
Take your own, or buy a GPS when ya get there, Eagle Riders charged $15.00 a day for a Zumo, ended up costing just as much as buying one after a couple of weeks.
Mad Maps supply really good pocket sized, waterproof maps of motorcycle runs and are great for when you pull up for a break to think about where to wing it to next stage, well worth picking one or two up for your trip. They have relevant info for bikers.
Like Ricky says, don't worry about taking too much gear with you, it's all there and bloody cheap, you'll kick yourself for lugging all your own gear from home when you just know that you'll want to have a spend up on some of that just can't get in OZ stuff.
