Oil cooler adapter needed?

G'day all, I have a question about fitting an oil cooler to a '07 FXST.

Can any one tell me if I can use the two plug bolt holes (red arrows) with fittings to fit an oil cooler or do I have to purchase an adapter?

    Cheers.

You need an adaptor from either Jagg or HD. The lower plug is the gallery that feeds oil to the filter, then though the filter to the upper gallery & back to the engine.

Using those holes directly to a cooler without an adaptor would mean the oil would be unfiltered

Having said that, I have a bare SE crank case in front of me & looking at the filter boss & oil gallery holes, I'm sure something can be done to avoid needing an adaptor. The engine would have to be apart though.

The best oil cooler in my opinion is Jagg which I purchased from rollies speed shop a sponsor of this site - good price great service and the oil cooler mounts up further on the frame away from stones and road debri unlike HD oil coolers

rollie speed shop sent everything I needed it only took rouchly 3 quarters of an hour to fit

I live out in western queensland where the temp at the moment is sitting around 37 degrees and my bike does not go much over 110 degrees

    just my 2cents worth

You will still need an adapter no matter what cooler you buy. Whether you get the Jagg or the ultima type. You can save a couple of bucks by getting one without the thermostat in it. But either way you will need one.

I do a lot more hot weather riding than cold (live in Qld), wasn't looking at  the temperature bypass valve but can always add it at a later date if cold weather is a major factor.

Thanks again for your knowledgeable advice, much appreciated.

    cheers

Another question, would you need a temperature bypass valve if you have a adaptor with a thermostat?

I'm assuming you are talking about the Jagg adaptor 4700 with thermostat controlled by-pass, which means you won't need a separate by-pass.

I've had a Jagg 6 row vertical cooler on my bike for 5 years with no problems. I also fitted a manual thermostat but rarely turn it off. When I contacted Jagg they recommended that you don't need a thermostat because the motor will always run above 180 degrees. I fitted a temp gauge with the sender unit mounted in the sump (oil pan) before I fitted the Jagg cooler. I done this so I could check how it worked. My bikes temp where 250 in summer and dropped by 30 degrees . My bike runs around 180 to 200 in summer now with the engine mods and the TTS tuner. I highly recommend the Jagg cooler to anyone who has a Harley no matter where you live. I fitted a HD 10 row horizontal cooler to my old 06 dyna with a auto thermostat and it only lasted 12 months before the thermostat jammed closed. My opinion is if you have a Harley cooler is to bin the radiator and buy the 10 row Jagg radiator with the twin fans if you do a lot of stop and start in heavy traffic. Most guys in the states are doing the swap and leaving the HD thermostat on the bike and running the Jagg 10 row cooler because they flow twice the oil.
