Hi there
OK I'm new at this... About to replace the handgrips on my 09 Bagger.. Throttle side: carefully undid the 2 screws holding the upper and lower halves of the switch block together and gently moved the upper part of the switch block clear of the flange on the grip.
Problem is the lower half of the switch block does not move? gently tried to move it away from the h'bar but I don't want to force anything because of the switches (audio and cruise) so what do I need to do to get it clear the lower half of the grip flange so I can remove it.. Spastic!
Cheers
Worked it out. Just backed of the master cylinder bolts a tad and it gave me enought to shake the lower half loose enought to remove and replace the grip.
Just wondering if any other folks that have replaced their original grips with either Roland Sands or Performance Machine grips have the sloppiness at the switch block problem.
It's not the backwards and forwards play but the side to side (or up and down play) that's annoying for a throttle grip. The original didn't have any play, but was nowhere near as comfortable as these.
Anyone used a fix, they'd care to share? Or any ideas?
Anyone??
As they say neccessity is the mother of invention. Fixed!
How I went about it:
Firstly, I cleaned the bar adjacent to the switch housing with 50/50 isoprpyl alcohol and then used a product called Venture Tape (it's used by craftspeople involved with lead lighting). I picked up a metre of it from a craft supplies for peanuts. It's an adhesive backed copper tape 3/8" wide and about 0.010" thick. Used 2 wraps side by side x 2. Smoothed it out using a large round knitting needle. Applied a bit of heat with a hair dryer and a light smear of Kopr Kote anti-seize grease. Then I moved the assembly (by just unpinching the two bolts that clamp it to the handlebars) back to the centre a bees d*ck (1/16") and the grip is perfect. No slop and twists back perfectly. Overkill maybe but it did the job! Cheers
