i removed the gunny reflectors tonight, with a little bit of elbow grease, just pried them off and then cleaned the sticky goo up with mr sheen it looks soo much cleaner and way nicer. DOWN WITH REFLECTORS LOL
I used to have a 2001 FXST, I used the mrs hair dryer and her tooth string,,,whatever that is called. You gently heat the top or side of the reflector and gradually the tooth string is 'sawed' through the adhesive. The residue comes off easily with citrus cleaner.
Thanx for all the the tips Guyz & Gals,
I have a new 2009 Softail Custom.
Went and got me 2 different sized plastic putty type knives.
Sprayed reflectors with DW40. Let settle for a minute.
Putty knife cut the front fork refletors off with reasonable ease (just take your time doing it).
The reflctors on the sissy bar (which was no longer on da bike) came off very easily.
Then I simply sprayed some more DW40 onto the remaining goo on the front forks, let settle for a while - then used the purry? (putty) knife and soft cloth to remove the remaining goooooo.
Cheers Big Ears.
The f#$^kers wouldnt see ya if ya had a siren light on your helmet anyway.
good old fashioned Eucalyptus Oil works a treat, been used in Aussie homes for years.....
I just wriggled them until i could slowly takepull off and then polished the left over glue with Tar & Bug remover to clean them
OMG mate just pull them off and clean them up with a soft rag and some soapy water.
Man people should buy bikes to ride not to look pretty
And as for being Illeagl i think there are a lot of laws but i tend to just veiw them as guidelines that are open to interation
No offence meant
Fellas I may well be wrong but I was under the impression that removing those reflectors might void your insurance. those pricks will do anything to avoid paying you out in an accident and they can say that your bike was unroadworthy, illegal without said reflectors, if some clown runs into the side of you for example, espescially at night! HD dont put them on your bike because they think they look nice its because they have to if they want to sell bikes in this country.Australian design rules specify they must be in place. Something to look into? I hate the fucken things too. Cheers
The way i look at it, as i ride daytimes only i dont need them.
hair dryer 2 mins, removed them by hand and cleaned up with some eucalyptis oil....too easy
Mine came off easy with the missus hair dryer and fishing line. Ukaliptus oil on a rag cleaned the residue off.
1. Park bike in sun
2. have beer.
3. look at bike in Sun.
4. have another beer.
5. grab reflector and twist, really hard. Reflector comes off in your hand.
6. Repeat for other side (beers as well).
7. Use thumb to roll off the sticky shit. Eucalyptus oil for the left overs.
8. Repeat step 2,3 and 4, as many times as necessary until satisfied
I aggree the forks look a lot cleaner now. However, I really now see all the shone chips need fixin and maybe a Black set of sliders will fix that!!!
Regards RT
Used a pair of 90 degree circlip pliers to pull of the reflectors, once reflector was removed there was still some double sided tape.
Used Prepsol to remove the rest of the tape. Managed to get all 4 reflectors of in around 15 minutes. No scratches or marks on any of the surfaces.
Grab with hand, wipe with sleeve for any double sided snot. 20 sec job.
Fishing line and solvents on paint seem a tad extreme? Maybe thats the former auto painter in me talkin. Or maybe mine were poorly stuck.
