Dam Rider Down

Niso of the ' Dam Riders’ posted up a ride to Rockley (south of Bathurst) for today.  Due to circumstances we ended up at the Tarana Hotel west of Lithgow in the back blocks.   Nice lunch, nice ride and time to head home back over and down the mountains along the Great Western Highway.

Traffic and road works were a bit of a bugga going thru the mountains.  We hit the Lawson Woodford Bends which to a 2 lane good road each way divided by 3 odd meters of planted scrub and an Armco railing dividing east from west bound traffic.

Just into the bends east bound, I was behind Chrissie (Niso’s partner).  We were in the lane closest to the centre divided area – the lane on our left was chocker of cages but still they were still travelling at around the 80 K speed limit – as we were – then this cager decided to pull out into the direct path of Chrissie and her Sportster.   Chrissie came under dire emergency brakes – smoking up the tyres but kept it nice and straight – I was under brakes and thinking if Chrissie hits this cage and comes down I am in trouble also.

Chrissie jumped off the brakes and her only option here was to move to the right - away from the cage, however this put her running along the Armco railing.   The roadway was by now sweeping left – as was the Armco railing – my heart sank to my guts as I watched Chrissie keeping her iron horse upright as she battled the Armco railing.  This battle caused a massive break to her lower right leg ; this would have prevented her from applying any foot brake whatsoever – however through skillful riding she kept her iron horse upright as the speed was washing off.  She battled this Armco railing for well over 200 feet before she drew her bike off the Armco and did a few flips at low speed.

The cage driver simply drove on.  By the time I was off my bike Chrissie was dragging herself from the middle of the laneway to the Armco railing.  What a strong competent rider to say upright while her iron horse fought with the Armco railing.

Then there was the other cage drivers who could not do enough for Chrissie – one called the ambulance for us – others blocked the roadway behind our bikes while another two cage drivers helped me settle Chrissie into a comfortable position.  One was an off duty Nurse who was a god send – love ya work lady and I didn’t even get a chance to thank you.

By this time others on our ride had pulled up and helped.  Niso made it back and was in a world of hurt when he saw it was his Chrissie.  Ambos didn’t take that long to arrive and immediately saw the dire situation of Chrissie lower right leg.  They filled Chrissie with morphine until the pain was bearable – but no morphine was stopping the pain when they put her leg in a splint.   The Ambos were fantastic – love your work guys.  We were on the roadside for a fair while but they wanted to stabilize her break before taking her to hospital.  10 points to Dragon for arriving next at the crash and pulling her bike away from Chrissie as it was leaking fluids, then being the official drip holder for the Ambos.

I gave a description of the cage to the Highway Patrol Cops and they reckon it was identical to one they got a radar speed on about 30 minutes prior but could not get around the catch the prick due to heavy traffic.

When cutting her Kevlar jeans and riding boots away from her – the Ambo commented on the quality strength of the jeans and boots – money well spent Chrissie.

Chrissie, you are one tuff lady to keep that iron horse upright while it fought with the Armco.
