Help with Clutch dragging problem....

    Thanks Dazza,

    And Thank you Houli,

Going back in the Shop tomorrow...  I want a reliable local ride.  The cool part for me is the kicker.  Love it..  I will end up with as much money in this as a newer bike, but kick start is a thrill for me.  You just have to learn HOW She wants to start.  Everyone else battles trying to tell and old character bike how to start, and you have to learn the individual personality.  On this one, you do not even turn on the ignition, just give it a few squirts with the throttle, pull the full choke up on the S&S and kick Her through a compression stroke, then there is fuel waiting.  Turn on the ignition, and she fires right up.  Otherwise you may have to go through a half dozen cycles of coughs and false starts that die out... heh he...

Anyway Houli, thanks for the help, we will do a full tear down again and I have copied all this off to give to the old HD Mechanic and hopefully we can fix what is there or will get what we need to stop the dragging.  The rest is a good dependable local rider.  I am thinking of shipping my big new Ultra over for a tour of the Rockies, Yellowstone, Cody Wyoming Rodeo and Sturgis next year... So thinking I need this old Bitsa all worked out as I lose my Ultra for 8 weeks or so before, and 6-7-8 weeks after for shipping...

This old Shovel Bitsa is a real "shake and bake" machine... Somehow forty years ago I don't remember my Rigid 66 Shovel being that bad, course I was young dumb stupid and full of pi$$ in those days...

Anyway, thanks again for the help Houli, you're a Champion

    Thanks Dave,

I am weak on transmissions and clutches other than replacing the whole thing, and rebuilding lower ends.   If I was retired I would have a go at it myself, but I have more money than time so I am putting it in the Shop for them to have another go...   Thank you Guys, advice printed off going in the Shop in about an hour....

Like "Dirty Harry" said at about the vintage of this bike: "A man has to know his limitations"... heh he...

Turned out that the keyway was a little rough, new key on shaft and clean up, about 2 1/2 hours to tear it down and fix it to get it right...

All good now, and I rode it around and then back home, no more crash box...  The coolest part is that Maroochydore HD, says they should have caught it on the first tear down, new Primary gasket, new key, full repack, and would you believe it:  NO CHARGE...!!

I have heard horror stories in the past, but they have always been good by me.  I think they have cleaned up their act in the last couple years with new Management, and are certainly trying to do the right thing by people now.  They have my vote....

some aftermarket woodwuff key's are too proud & the clutch hub will not sit  down on the taper proper ,      then you will end up with a crooked crutch

Make sure you're primary chain isnt too tight.

I chased a dragging clutch for a long time only to work out that the chain was too tight.
