Found this on the net today - Implications of travelling through speed cameras head on and thumbing the authorities maybe????Published : Tuesday, 18 October 2011

The Victorian police claims that, in 2010, 49 per cent of all motorcycles caught speeding through fixed and mobile cameras in the state could not be identified. In raw numbers, that equates to 10,800 riders which the police believes escaped fines.

Those statistics form the backbone of a police submission, released under the authority of Deputy Commissioner Kieran Walshe, to a Victorian parliamentary enquiry into motorcycle safety, which calls for compulsory front identification on bikes.

''The identification of all motor vehicles, including motorcycles both from the front and rear, will assist in reductions in speed and speed-related road trauma,'' the report said.

There has been an immediate reaction to the police submission. Prominent motorcycle advocate Marcus Wigan was on the front foot this morning, telling listeners on top rating radio station 3AW that he was “entertained” by the police statistics.

“I am always entertained by the way the police manage to produce statistics that don’t seem to line up with experience elsewhere,” he said. “When I did a speed camera study for VicRoads in 2001, it had 703 car violations without front number and identification and 1044 for motorcycles. In South Australia it was similar sort of ratio.

“These figures are so out of line with the experience of 10 years ago that it is something that I’d like to go and check. This a very interesting shift.

“There are only three jurisdictions where front number plates are still allowed, let alone mandated.”

Kieran Walshe responded to Wigan’s comments: “With due respect to the Professor’s research, it was 10 years ago. We do have a vast increase in the number of fixed and mobile speed cameras operating in the state and our date for 2010 is very clear.”

Meanwhile, the police submission to the enquiry has also called for riders being forced, by law, to wear five pieces of protective clothing such as a helmet, jacket, pants, gloves and boots. At the moment only a helmet is mandatory.

This represents a policy shift, with former Deputy Commissioner Ken Lay not a champion of the blanket mandate.

"Our intelligence continues to show that a lack of protective clothing continues to be a key factor in road trauma involving motorcycles,'' the submission said. ''While in the past we have maintained a strong push in encouraging riders to always wear full safety gear, we have now taken the next step and asked that consideration be given to the mandatory wearing of protective clothing and a national standard for this equipment.''

The parliamentary inquiry continues, with the last two days set aside for public hearings. The final report will be tabled in state parliament in June, 2012.

Singapore requires front number plates on all bikes there-- they look stupid-- some are stuck on fairing fronts as a 'label' while others are numbers on a piece of perspex bolted between the fork legs or under the tree on a L shaped bracket.

Ya gotta have a helmet with the Singapore Standards sticker on it (similar to ours) however in the years I was over there I never knew of anyone getting ticketed for not having one. You can also ride with flip flops on and your jacket on backwards-- that's OK.

How about all cars to be yellow so they are visible as well? But hey thats Australia the land of winge and no action, the only action is from the Gov, we let them keep on doing this shit and really dont do anything about it. I believe to make this country better we really need to make a stand ( riot ) like what happens overseas......or even nobody goto work for a week, that will stop the country right there....

from memory front number plates were removed by law because 90% of bike accidents resulted in the rider going over the front of the bike, where the plate was usually affixed to the top of the headlight cowl, thus causing lascerations to the rider before he even came into contact with a car or pedestrian. personally i think this latest tactic is just the government trying to rid the streets of bikes and or "bikies" any way they can. anti biker laws didnt work as they had hoped, so lets make them wear yellow saftey vests and see if they will keep riding their harleys. the day im "forced" to wear 5 pieces of safety clothing ,regardless of if i already do or dont, is the day ill stop riding. i want to ride because its my choice . i dont want to be dictated to by vicpol, based on statistics that can be manipulated by them to get what they want. how will we ever teach the younger generations to be responsible for their own actions when so many of our actions are no longer our own. laws for this , laws for that. rules, regulations, where will it all end ? i hope im still riding at 78. so i can do a lap of parliment with my bony old fingers stuck in the air at them and maybe even ride naked and not be concerned about the consequences. my safety is my concern.. not some dickwads sitting in an office pushin a pen.
ill get off my box now and get dressed. cheers.

As for front number plates, I can remember the front number plate on my Honda 750/4 it was mounted across on the front guard. The front number plates were removed because of pedestrians.

As for speed camera's if they complaining about not being able to fine riders its only a revenue raising attack on bikers. If they want to fix it have the cameras mounted to take a rear shot of the motorcycle easy fix......problem fixed.

Protective clothing, well this is my opinion. Everyone that rides a motorcycle should wear protective clothing, helmet & gloves every time you ride. I wouldn't ride without it, cant ride your bike when you have had all the skin taken off on your hands from scraping it on the road when you have an off just from not wearing gloves.

You may not look cool wearing protective clothing but I don't care about that, I would rather have my body in one piece when I hit the deck. Going to hospital to have all that crap scraped out of my skin with a scrubbing brush is not for me, I want my skin on my body not a road.

Also guys they want high vis vests which means they can blame the motorcycle for all accidents . by law it means it is our job to be seen not for motorists to look, also if you were to be hit by a car and not wearing a vest the accident would be your fault. Yet loud pipes are not allowed.

The government needs to remeber, that sight is an active or concious act so therefore you must look to see. Where as sound is a passive act you well hear something regaurdless of concious thought

if drivers cant see a bike with its headlight on they sound not be fit to drive.

last point about 6 months ago i saw a policeman on bike in his high vis jacket, lights flashing but no siren and a car pulled out and knocked him off hes bike

i can say know i will not be abidding

This Law that they are trying to pass on Hi Vis jackets , can someone please tell me  how a Hi Vis jacket going to help drivers see motor cyclist in their 'Blind Spots' (which all cars have) , there's a reason that they're called 'Blind spots' , again this seems to be some fat usless prick that's sitting a office somewhere trying to justify his job , I work nights and often see riders going pass work late at night , some have Hi Vis jackets on and some don't , now in the darkness of night I have noticed that these jackets DON'T STAND OUT , the theory on Hi Vis is sound but doesn't allow for a vehicle traveling at high speeds , every idiot I've heard on the radio goes on about how they wear them at work , ok fair enough on a work site or on the side of the road they do identify a person working but they are not moving at high speeds and I'm sure that if the records were looked into of how many workers have been hit or killed while wearing a HiVis jacket it would prove that they are not really a safety device just a way of identifying workers. Check the video on you tube of the motor cycle cop getting hit, he had sirens , flashing lights and  hi Vis rain gear on and th car still managed to drive straight into him , let's educate motorist before persecuting motor cyclist.
