Theres a few thread on switching to forwards without having to take the cover off,

Id try hwy pegs first, loved the forwards on my sporty but on a Dyna theres a lot more reach, Ive got hwy pegs but rarely use them except on a very long trip to stretch, just dosent fit as well on a bigger bike for me.

Hey scouser, go the forwards mate, much better IMO. I don't have long legs and I ride fine. That said, on a long trip it's nice to be able to stand up and stretch the legs on the mids. I did just put the mid pegs back on for a trip to Tassie a few years ago just for that reason.

There are several methods for either removing the shaft or leaving it in. Do a search either here on on the US HD Forums.

I left mine in and just wedged the inside lever behing a bolt head...has never come out in 2.5 years. I covered the whole with a brass button sprayed black (a RAN Petty Officers button) looks cool, just used silastic. You could cover the hole with anything you like.If you want any photos let me know

Also if your keen you can hacksaw the shaft without taking off the primary, I might do that one day...when I buy a roundtuit.

     Hey Scouser,

to remove the shaft you'd have to remove both the outer (easy) and inner (harder) primaries.  It seems common to just secure the shaft and plug the hole in the outer primary.
