DETROIT (AP) – Harley-Davidson is recalling about 308,000 motorcycles, most of them in the U.S., to fix a switch problem that can cause failure of the brake lights and possibly the rear brakes themselves.
The company said in documents filed last week with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that brake light switches can be exposed to too much heat from the exhaust system. The heat can cause the brake lights to fail, and the problem also can cause fluid leaks and the loss of rear brakes, the documents said.
The problem affects Touring, CVO Touring and Trike motorcycles from the 2009 through 2012 model years. They were built between June 6, 2008 and Sept. 16, 2011.
Harley says it will notify owners of the recall. Dealers will install a rear brake light switch kit free of charge.
The recall affects about 251,000 motorcycles in the U.S., with the balance in other countries.
Harley said it noticed the problem in June 2010 when it got a report of a Trike model that lost its rear brakes due to the problem. The company began investigating, and in July 2010, it sent investigators to a dealership in Louisiana to inspect another bike that was involved in a crash.
Harley has not determined yet if the problem caused the Louisiana crash, which injured one person, company spokeswoman Maripat Blankenheim said Monday. She did not know how seriously the person was hurt, but said Harley is not aware of any other crashes or injuries.
Harley said in the documents that there have been no more reports of the problem occurring since July 2010.
The company also said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that it expects the recall to cost $10 million to $12 million, which will be charged as an expense in the fourth quarter.

Hi there
Just as a matter of curiosity: do we contact our local HD dealer? I have an 09 FLHTCU that falls in the recall (second owner)
Anyone know how it will work?
Cheers
If I had a bike that was involved in the recall I would go on the front foot seeking the problem to be corrected ASAP.
Can you be sure that HD has your contact details since you are the 2nd owner? I suggest not (unless you acquired 2nd hand from stealer).
I would print up the recall details and go into your local stealer and go from there.
I suppose it is to do with the fact that these bikes have the ABS Brakes on them. This is a combination of electrical (computerised ) sensors controlling the hydraulic braking system. A short or electrical failure could send incorrect information to the ABS computer. You might want whoa, it might say goer!!
I arleady had a profile setup on the HD USA site and went here entered my VIN and printed off the recall notice. Don't know if this helps but I thought I'd post it.

anybody had a similar problem on there 07 heritage , break lights stuck on permanately , they reckon it might be the switch ????WTF .
Yes - mine was front brakes . Wiries to microswitch in switch block.
Some dope had pinched the wires where the they pass through the switch block. Easy fixed once found it but it was arcing and intermittant.
Try disconnecting the switch - then check voltage, shorts and earths etc
Hey - Looking through all the govt guff on importing and just found out grey imports rules require the RAW to follow up and complete any recalls at their cost!
Heres a question, How many Grey import Owners out there have ever been followed up by the RAWS or Importer and had a recall done that was applicable to their bike from its home market?
Don't shoot the messenger - just curious
My mates new Roadie is getting it done on Saturday up at Robbo's....
