Its like this guy's......now that i'm here and settled in quite comfortably there is a good chance i would pay a $20 lifetime membership....however, if i was to come across this site by doing a search on something, which is how i ended up here in the first place, and somebody put there hand out for a $20 membership fee i wouldnt be here and nobody else would be either .... best support we can give the admin's is to support the sponsor's.

Id pay a one off now that Im here and digging it (but id want a pin ....and a shirt :) ) but I agree that if I came across this sight (which I did) by surfing the net , I wouldnt have joined up if I was asked to put my hand in my pocket .

then theres the issue of being a paid up member of a motor cycle forum ,which could have ramifications due to the association laws :P

    Dicko,

I appreciate you're trying to be positive, but there's many pitfals in chargning for forum membership.

Just having to administer payments would take up a lot of time.  Then once you charge a fee there's a contract between the site and it's members, what a nightmare that would be.  While it sounds like a good idea it would not work in practice.  It would aslo put new people off joining if there was a charge.

I'm quite happy running this site, it has never been about the money.  Advertising is a good way to pay for the site expenses, it makes the site free for people to use and join and it also is very easy in terms of administration.

My only motivation for running this site is the personal interest value it gives me, and I'm sure the same goes for Bano.

    Cheers,
    KC

I stumbled across a pommy HD site and the banter and topics etc were similar to this one. But... it was a 'pay site' and I couldn't be arsed forking over the $$$??? and I reckon most people are like that.

There's some good points you make Dicko as it does cost money to run a site. Before I bought ma Harley I was into the Vintage Motocross and the OZ VMX site has a link whereby Members can donate if they so desire.

Is that an option on here for those who'd like to chip in?

You should be getting something out  your time and effort. I have been a member about eight months and purchased both the badge and shirt to support the site. Would continue to buy  items just to support.

Whatever direction the forum takes....I want to be grandfathered in......Jus'sayin!!!  lol

I do have to say that being an ADMIN and Moderator does take a lot of time and energy.  Don't ask me how I know these things!!!  Hehehe

This forum has it's share of drama but not near the bullshit that goes on in other forums from the States!  This is another reason why I enjoy coming over and bullshit along with everyone else.  You fuggers are direct and to the ....... well....disregard that comment!  You fuggers are alright in my book regardless of....well....disregard that comment also.

other forums that I'm on give both options - free or one of paid membership.

that way people will join up as they dont have to pay but once there will often upgrade their membership

a good example is a local bike site - Netrider - that you can sign up free but only paid members are eligible to enter competitions from sponsors, can post items for sale etc

1130cc.com in the states offers both paid and free as well

agree with others on the amount of time it takes to admin a forum though....kudos

I like to think that I contribute through always trying to introduce new members. Whenever Im out riding and I get talking with other riders I always give them the details of the site......in turn I would hope that more members= more revenue opportunities for advertisers, more members to contribute info, more people to ride and talk with. Win win.

I used to be on a Triumph forum site in Australia about 18 months ago.

In their wisdom they decided that they would charge a membership fee.

Guess what happened to that site??????

    LONG GONE.

Forgot to mention this earlier but a great way to support the site is to buy a HD Forums AU badge.

    Ho,

The benefit they have is a much bigger target audience, you have all who ride the japa and other brands as a potential audience.  Whereas this site is a niche site for Harley only, about 20% probably what the PSB site could grow to.  In any case you get much of that stuff on here already, i.e unlimited PM's and ability to edit any post you've ever made.
