Or shit between needle and seat, i`d look at upgrading to a 1990 + CV carb if you have not already done so.

If you want to do it properly and not loose any parts then yes, if you don`t have a workshop manual and as you said not up on carbs don`t do it till you have a manual, you might be able to get an exploded view off the net.

You might want to get a rebuild kit new gaskets needle seat etc if the carbs never been touched or as i mentioned before get a CV.

If there's shit in the bowl you might consider taking the tank off and give it a good flush. Also get yourself a fuel filter that fits between the tank and carb to stop this happening again. Nothing worse than fueling up at a country servo then finding out 20 k down the road that his tanks where full of shit as your bike starts missing a farting.

CV's are damn under rated. Great carb if set up right.

Totally agree Oz, what i have never understood is the love of S&S carbs.

depends what your set up is, but for riding , runs & so on what Bobby Wood does works for me. i'm going to start riding country miles again, so thinking about putting my old Woods Rebel carb back on removing the CV 51 . the rebel carb is a modified cv44. works brilliant & i got great economy. the CV51 works brilliant too just uses heaps more fuel. i'm hopping to do some long runs very soon.

    also thought i

d say i always pull the guts out of the vacume petcock run it manual, but i got a pringel on it now, always turn the fuel off  1/2 a k b4 your going to stop, then that overflow problem never happens. but good thing you cleaned that crap , a ryco v8 straight filter works for me, change it every say 6 months.

if you get a cv40, try  & get a bobby wood K1 needle a 45 or bored out 46 pilot jet & just ask ol Bobby what main jet for your set up, & you will be smiling at how sweet & how far you go on a tank of fuel. just leave the rest of the carb as is but can radius the edge to the slide to help flow if you want. the wood Rebel i got has Holley carb jets bobby don't say that, but it's true & the main jet goes up in 1 thou increasements so can dial it in if you like stuffing around & like perfection.

    cheers
