Harley Dealer bringing in "Greys"

Visited Harley Heaven on Sat morning to have a look at a 2008 CVO Springer they had for sale. Unfortunately it was sold but looking around I noticed that they had quite a few imports including a CVO Vrod.

Speaking to one of the salesmen he said that HH import quite a few bikes and that if I was looking for a low Klm CVO, that an import would be the best bet. He also said that HH do all the compliance work for any bike they bring in and offer a normal warranty.

All makes sense I suppose, however I was a bit surprised at a Harley dealer bring in bikes given some dealers were kicking up a stink about parts imports and also I have had a couple of the Sydney Dealers tell me to stay clear of "Greys" (maybe because they were not bringing them in!!!).  All that said why shouldn't HH join the bandwagon,

No real point to this rave, just I didn't expect to walk into a Harley dealer and see imports.

I have a mate who works at PS (HH) not the retail section and the amount of greys they have sitting there is in the millions of dollars and some great looking bikes, and some not so nice, bu they have been bringing them in for a very long time.

The problem with the dealers selling greys is they will offer 8 to 10 grand on traded bikes. Why would they give you 22.000 on a trade when they can buy in the states for 10.000. Sucks we can't buy parts in the states but they can flood the Australian market with grey imports pushing the second hand prices down. Insurance will be the next thing to take a dive so get a agreed value or lose a shit load of coin on the pay out.

    ^+1.

If you have an "agreed" value rather than a "market" value, you will at least get that should the bike take a tumble. If you take a market value, then you are at the mercy of the market, and your $20k bike might end up only paying you out $12k.

Read the fine print in your policy. If you are using Market Value, you might not be insured for the amount listed on your renewal. That amount is the market value at the time the renewal was issued. If the value goes through the floor in 6 months, then so does your payout!!!

I would NEVER use a market value.

Reading up on all the forums relating to Grey Imports

There is a dealer in my state in the process of bringing over a crate of 2012 Fatboy Lows with 20km on the clock. Price they are asking for is well worth a look however, would love to get an idea of what I should be weary of.

I have zero issues with the purchasing process, however the fact that these guys can bring bikes to AUS and flog them off at the same prices whist I cant buy my parts from the States really fucking shits me. Its irony at its finest, you can buy a bike from the states but the minute you want a few HD parts...................you're fucked!

    Soap box this evening!!

Said it before and will say it again there in in too make a buck and keep profit margins up , BUT they are lilling there own buisness , One of the reasons people have bought Harleys is the trade in value and the mistaken believe they don't lose there value like the jap bikes . Well i've got news people's , it may well of been in the past, but now its BOLLOCKS .

YOU PAY $31.500 FOR A ROAD KING , MINUS STAMP DUTY AND REGO , GST true value of what your paying is really about 27500 , the rest is govt shit what you pay for being the first proud owner .

Do a couple thousand klm on it , have a probelm and ask them to but it back try maybee 20 grand in the first 6 months if your lucky probanbly about 16 a year later .why cos that 27 grand import on there floor only cost 12 and maybee 3-4 to get here , giving them a bigger profit margin .

If you love Harleys , go ahead , pay big money , lose big money and be happy , but has far has i'm concerned H arley dealers are cheapening there own product ,

Biggest buyers are the baby boomers who buy a harley late in life when they have the disposable income , But after they have bought the bike , paid out for the loud pipes , bought the Harley t shirts , leather vests , run around scaring old ladies in there datsun 120 y's relized that putting that sneer on there faces , makes them look like complete tosspots .

Well then they look to sell there precious peice off machinery that has never seen cold , or rain , only has 3000 sunny miles on it riding round the esplanade . And when they see what a shit price they get , they will start to tell there fellow dentists and there accountant freinds . Don't buy a Harley .

Personaly , I'll always buy Harleys BUT ,,,,, NEVER EVER A NEW ONE not from the theiving bastards we call stealers . ... They could'nt give a fuck and are PURPOSLY running the price of them down to attract the younger buyer who don't have the money .

Hey choppersmad. I am now considering now looking for a Fatboy Low in the US. My original post was a bike shop in my state said to me about a month ago $22,000 but when I called recently they are now saying $25,000 which includes govt charges.

Went to HD dealer and when I tried to get a price out of them they would not budge on $28,500.00.

Looking on the net you can pick up 2012 with little kms for approx $17,000.00. What process did you go through to get it to Aus?

If you are going to trading up every couple of years I think `local` bikes are the go. If you ride em till they need replacing an `import` will be ok. Resale doesn`t mean much if it`s got 80K on the clock.

JD does that 25000.00 include "ride away".

Id like to see these grey imports banned.

it dosent help anyone except a handful of dealers making a $$$ at everyone elses expense,
They get these bikes for about 5-7k and 1k shipping so making massive profits(not passed on to the purchaser)

Ive seen a few that i can only describe as "Dodgy" mix of front end parts not matching the model so likely front end accident etc.

Had a similar thing with a jap car many years ago purchased because at the time it was a bit rare but mostly because it had great value/resale retention.
Govt in all their wisdom decided to allow grey imports, then a car that kept its value fro years is suddenly worth peanuts.
