I've just purchased a 2010 XL883 Custom (21" front wheel, and forward controls) and I need some luggage.
Given I'm coming from a touring bike (Kwaka' 1000GTR, where I was a bit spoilt for space) I need some panniers/saddlebags.
Some folk reckon not to get leather saying synthetic last longer and is more waterproof.
Any of you lot able to offer any advice on what fits a Sporty Custom (and does it need a frame/support behind it) and where are some good online sites for purchases in general?
Thanks,
John Kennedy
i have a xl883c and have a solo rack which holds up to 10kg,i was talking to one of the other forum guys who used to have an xl883c (rodders) and he had a pair of throw over panniers from bikers gear Australia that fitted under seat and tied them to bike frame or shocks, they were not completly waterproofed so he used vacuum bags and had no problems.
Thanks for replies.
I guess it depends how far afield / how long away - I'm used to travelling with twin pannier bags and a top box. I do not propose to weigh down my Sporty Custom with that much luggage, for that's not the design function of this type of bike. However, I do need luggage for a week or ten days away.
I'm leaning towards purchasing synthetic leather saddle bags with a metal frame behind to keep the bags off the moving parts - NB: such kit is available directly from H-D themselves and is in their online catalogue (but probably much dearer). NB2: this luggage WILL NOT live on the bike, for IMHO it doesn't look too attractive, but will purely be fitted for trips away.
