G'day Crew,
The ride (2009 granny glide) has developed an annoying little oil leak from the transmission. I know it's from there cause I use Redline and the color is a bit of a giveaway.
It's just a drop or two overnight so really hard to determine where it's coming from. I take it for a ride after cleaning it all up and nothing, next morning there are the tell tale signs on the floor. Sort of like a new puppy you left in the house too long....
If anyone has some ideas where to start, I'd apprecaite it.
Cheers
Does it continue to leak if left? or is it just those couple of spots after parking up.
Bike on side stand or vertical on a strong arm?
Has tranny ever been stripped?
First thoughts are to make sure tranny isn't overfilled with oil, and if it's not, start looking around the output shaft.
Plumb bob up from the oil spots,,,,mirror on the floor to spot oil underside of tranny.
Thanks Rider,
Only seems to be a few spots, the pool doesn't get any bigger over time.
The bike is left on the jiffy stand and as such the leak runs accross the bottom of the frame from the right hand side.
I'll leave the bike on the bike lift nice and straight and go with the mirror.
Appreciate your assistance,
Regards
Just another thought biff, after noticing your location,,, not sure exactly how the breather is set up on your bike,, but it would pay to check that one of those freindly wasps hasn't decided to nest in it and block it off.
They're pretty handy at building in small exhaust pipes, diff, transmission and fuel tank breathers. It can happen in a matter of hours.
What happens with diffs and trannys when the breather is blocked is that after/during a run, they warm up and the oil expands a little,,, the unit can pressurize and force a little oil out the path of least resistance, usually input or output shaft oil seals.
Once the pressure is released, or the unit cools there is no more pressurization and the leak is no more.
(Seen shitloads of 4x4 diff pinion seals replaced cause of this only to find out the new one does exactly the same until the breather is cleared.)
