solo seat rego

I've got a 07 xl883c, and I'd like to take the rear footpegs off and change to a nightster seat to save myself a few bucks on rego. BUT, I don't want to devalue the bike by permanently making it a single. I know the iron can be registered as a single seater, even though you can add pegs and dual seat later. I guess my question is, do i have to get an LK7 compliance plate put on before i can get solo rego, will i be forced to drill out the thread for the foot peg brackets, or can i just take the gear off an pay rego as a solo without the compliance plate?

    cheers, hope i make sense.

I asked a similar question when buying my Iron and was explicitly told that to qualify for a single-seat rego there must be NO FKN WAY you can fir footpegs on there (ie: holes drilled out).

I actually asked about getting a 2up seat and then later taking it off and was told I'd have to leave it rego'd as a 2 seater unless the holes are drilled.

I'm no expert however, and this is Qld.

     From QLD Transport

    Seat reduction

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance premiums on

motorbikes are determined by the seating capacity of the

motorbike. Conversion of a motorbike from a

two-seater to a single-seater, or vice versa, can be

certified by an Approved Person as detailed in Section 2.

For two-seats to single-seat conversion the maximum

length of the upholstered section of the seat must be

500mm or less, and the pillion foot pegs must be

removed with any associated brackets and threaded

holes drilled out. You are not permitted to use a

removable cowl or other structure fitted over the seat

to reduce the length of the seat. You should seek advice

from an Approved Person before performing a seat

    reduction modification.

I had a Yamaha DT175 I converted to single seat rego, chopped seat and mod plated.  Seat looked shit and was too short, so converted seat back to standard with new cover.  Not sure to what extent its illegal, but dealer I was trading it in to knew it was going to be a pain in the ass (ie have to convert back to sell).  Didn't have to drill out peg holes in those days I don't think.

Also with a mod plate in qld, plate has to stay on vehicle even if modification is removed.  I'd guess by how stupid it works some times, you'd do a mod plate for a single seat, then once converted back, another mod plate right next to it saying the opposite.

not looking good. So are any sportsters starting life as a single seater? eg 48? or are they just two seaters with a single seat only on it ( as far as rego goes) thanks. I'm in qld too, so the above posts are v. helpful, thanks guys.

The Iron is stock with a single seat, same with the 48 I believe.

Good luck with that and yeah, it's a dumb arse Law; I went through this with a 1983 Ducati Pantah 600 about 15 years ago and yep, in Qld.

I was advised to grind off the rear footpeg mounts and chop the seat. WTF?!

I didn't want to ruin the originality of the bike so I kept the full rego; here's a photo of two Pantahs (not mine) with and without the removable 'seat cowl'.

    With cowl:

    and without cowl:

The bike is nearly 30 years old and at that age people like to see 'em restored to original. With that in mind there must be a way to push the issue. Any retired Judges on here feel like a challenge?

The seat cowl and pegs are DESIGNED to be removed as and when. What a f*ckin' dumb arse Law.

It's to do with CTP insurance from what I believe.

If some clown re-registers their bike as a solo seat (getting it checked etc) and then goes home and sticks the pegs and a seat back on a carries a passenger, the CTP is null and void.   If you hit something and injure somebody, they will not be covered.  I remember copping a fine for an unregisterred vehicle (no CTP, 2 fines)  years ago and it was a bigger fine for "driving uninsured" than what the "driving unregistered".

In the ACT the fine for unregistered is approx $480, and uninsured (CTP) is approx $560.

Here you pay your rego and CTP as a combined amount, direct to the RTA.

As far as I am aware there is no Rego/CTP discount available for single seats.

It makes sense to have a discount for genuinely single seated biles, because the biggest claim for CTP is for injuries to the pillion passenger. That said, the RTA can't create a system that allows some nuffy to register as single and then carry an unsinsured pillion, because the public health system will end up paying their hospital bills.

I say if you don't wanna cut your bike up, cough up the extra dough, and don't lose sleep over it.

Is it all worth it? I pay $130 single rego in qld for 6 months by the time you get the mod plate fitted and buy a seat there is not much difference. northey
