Automatic Battery Charger

    Looking for some advice here.

I have an Automatic Battery Charger put out by Projecta. I can start it up and once it's charged it just trickle feeds/maintains the charge so I won't blow anything up. Apologies if I am not supposed to provide links but the type I have is found on this link:

    http://www.projecta.com.au/catalogue/cid/3/asset_id/16

The question I have is, am I able to use this on my Fat Bob's factory battery in the 12V position, or do I have to flick it to 6V and leave it longer?

Not my area of expertise so figured I would post here.

    Thanks all

    Gday

All new Harleys have 12 volt electrical systems and batterys.

Charger must be on 12 volt to charge properly.Wont do any damage if you have had it on 6 volts.

6 volt systems were phased out in the  late  1950s

Dont charge a 6 volt battery on 12 volts. They cook and mabey go bang, acid everywhere.

    Cheers  Stewy

     Ok, no worries.

I shall remove the battery, connect her up on 12V and let it go. I guess there won't be any issues seeing as it is a sealed battery. I am hoping recharging it will not be an issue.

I'm thinking that Steamer is referring to leaving the ignition switch on, then removing the main fuse before disconnecting the battery before charging it. Trying to disconnect the battery without following this procedure will set off the factory alarm......if fitted.

It may be worthwhile noting for the OP, theres no need to remove the battery to charge it. Just hook up the charger, observing correct polarity, and let the charger do its stuff.

Are you serious??? No shit? I can lift the seat, remove the battery cover and charge the thing with all the cables still connected to the terminals?

Won't that affect the electrics  somehow.....maybe?

It does have the factory alarm by the way.

     Ok pedrod59, no worries.

Looks like if I want to do a one off charge every now and then, I can connect up my AC400 charger to the battery whilst it is still connected to the bike (with the ignition turned OFF) and it will not do any harm to the electrics and charge the battery.

    OR

I can purchase one of these AC150's that come with an additional harness that allows me to charge the bike up the same, but without removing the seat/battery cover to get to the terminals.

    Have I understood correctly?

Thanks pedro59. That's all I was wanting to do.

I don't get to ride it as much as I want and I noticed the other day when I cranked it over, for the first time it sounded like it almost didn't want too.

That's why I was inquiring about connecting the AC400 charger up. It's not something I was wanting to do on a regular basis.

If I find after I charge it up that the next time I go to ride it, it still has some issues starting,  then I might look at one of those AC150's or the like.

The bike sits external to the house (out of view) so is not near a power point.

What model C-Tek and whereabouts did you purchase it from?

Saw the link to the genuine Harley Battery Tender and the fuse off the positive lead looks like it would get in the way when attempting to attach it to your terminals. I had the battery out today so I could fit an aftermarket air horn and forgot about the alarm disarm procedure....hehehe....loud bastard ain't she!

Anyway, the space provided for the main positive cable and the size of the battery leave little, if not no space for the fuse to fit.

Curious if the C-Tek is the same. Nobody local stocks the Projecta AC150 here so interested in model/type for the Fat Bob.

    Thanks
