hi guys wondering if anyone out there got and ideas of what i can try to fix this
i got a 86 xlh 1100 and the clutch was slipping so i changed the friction plates and the steel plates
friction plates i got from barnett , steel plates from alto i re used the spring plate [ double steel plate ]
clutch was still slipping after that so i got a new diaphram spring and fitted that
it appeared to be ok when i took it for a test ride but after about 10 km started slipping again
i used genuine hd formula + transmission and primary case lubricant
hope someone out ther got some ideas as iam about stumped
i dont think it can be the cable as
if the cable would be stretched it would be hard to get it in gear due to the clutch not disengaging properly
but that should not cause it to slip once in gear
cable too tight could cause clutch to slip but i would think that that would have been from startup onwards and not after about 10 km into the test ride
but i will check it tomorrow anyway
cheers
Did you soak the new clutch plates in oil for 24hrs before you installed them, also make sure there is free play in the clutch cable has the required free play, is the clutch adjusted correctly.
no i didn't soak the plates for 24h.
according to the manual your supposed to soak them for 5 minutes which i did
i went through the setup as per the manual
going to pull the whole thing apart again and start from square one and see how i go if that wont do the job i take it to a workshop and have it looked at
if the clutch pack is good , then it must be the way it's adjusted , back the cable off too 1/2 lever slack only , adjust down on the adjuster screw & lock nut as just off buy 1/8 to 1/4 turn loose , make sure the 3 balls in the ramp release mech are in place 1st , then adjust the cable too 1/8 " slack take it for a gentle ride , let it cool down & then reajust again,
cheers for the help guys
finally got it working
i learned the hard way that the centre screw adjustment is very critical , a quater turn either way seems to be either to much or not enough
pulled it all apart again to make sure everything was ok then took it for a ride and kept on making adjustments till it was working properly
