I hit a Kangaroo a few weeks back on my 2000 FXDX. The bike is insured with QBE for market value.

The repair quote has come in close to $10k, but I really want to keep the bike as I have a fair bit extra' invested in it with Engine work and cosmetics etc'. To replace it with a bike as good, I'd put its value at $16k. What level do they write them off ??

QBE wrote my 02 Heritage off... I had AGREED value $25K,,,  I put in a tender of $5k to buy it back... which was rejected..

I went to the Auction & got it for $7K...    spent another $5K to get her back on the road...

Make sure that your bike is a REPAIRABLE WRITE OFF & NOT a STATUTORY WRITE OFF...

RWC , VIV test... RTA Inspection...  new plates & rego..   ( QBE will cash in & pocket your rego & 3rd Party )

While at the Auctions I noticed a LOT of Harleys there with very minor damage... tank Indicator, forks etc selling for $5 to $10 thou..

I think a lot of the repairers / dealers dont want to spend the time to work on a pranged bike, but would rather sell you another..

Thanks for the Info. there was zero Frame/Front end damage that I could see. Hit the 'Roo at around 80km'h, and the bike just slid on it's side..
Pretty much all Cosmetic including the Tank & guards, Instruments, pipes, A/C etc.
I priced most of the parts at around $5k, so $10k seems way overpriced, even acounting for labour.
At least it sounds like I may be able to buy it back off them if they write it off.
Should be able to fix it by the time my Wrist has healed !!

    Cheers

I wrote mine off a couple of months ago, came into a corner too fast and made the split second decision 'dirt' as opposed to bitumen, I knew I was going down regardless.   All the damage was along the right side of the bike, literally just sheared everything off.   They wrote the bike off, it was 4 year old but only 1600ks on it, just starting to get run in really.  Apparently because it high sided,  they were worried about the damage to the frame, so gave me a payout within 5 weeks. They offered me the bike back anyway, but I sold it to the company for 500 bucks.

I spoke to the assessor, he stated that the point they made the decision at was when they realised the master brake cylinder was sheared off as well, too expensive apparently for the overall cost of the bike.

With a repairable write off (in Vic anyway) even if re registered it stays on the register and you MUST declare it as being a repairable write off when selling - it remains on the list forever.

If they repairable write it off & you decide to buy it back & re build ..

I suggest you take a lot of photos of it before... during... & after repairs..

also photos of parts used, & keep all receipts for parts as you will need them for the VIV report..

Find out if Vic Roads have a licenced motorcycle VIV inspector in Ballarat?   otherwise you may have to transport it to Melb ??

I rebuilt a Honda 750 a few years ago that I bought at auction in Adelaide as I had done many cars and a few bikes over many years as a panelbeater..but nothing in the last 10 years until the Honda..Turned into a magor head fuck with getting registered and back on the road.I didnt know you needed pics of the bike in the damaged condition and also all receipts for parts ect and pics of the parts that I repaired ect...The pricks made the whole excersise very difficult so I would be very cautious !!

Wozza, thanks for the heads up re: photo's receipts etc'. It would be too easy just to jump in and fix it and forget about all that stuff .
I'll check if the Ballart Vicroads does VIV inspections.

Harley doesn't reccomend frames to be straightened, so if your doing an insurance quote through a dealer they'll replace the frame which makes it too costly and they'll write the bike off.  Last  one I wrote off QBE wouldn't let me buy the wreck because as the story goes they got into to many arguments with owners about what the wreck was worth and could get more money at the auctions than what people wanted to pay.

    An update for anyone interested.
Insurance quote ended up over $11k and sounded like it would be written off, so I cancelled the insurance claim.
Got the bike home and stripped down, and the paintwork is nearly done, hopefully with some custom work.
Just waiting on a few parts to turn up, so it should be on the road by the end of the month.
Total cost will be around $2k, using some parts I had laying around.

was told today that if its 3rd party its about 70% of value and you keep the bike and they deduct what the wreckers ofer for the bike and give you there umber to sell if you wish BUT if its you insurance valued at say 24 k and 12 k to repair but its worth say 14 k at auction they write it off as they save or make money BUT in some states and in vic soon all write off cant be repaired so that'll change the equasion to wreker price at auction and not rebuilder price at auction so the wreck will drop in price as only a wrecker or to be parted out price will be there and the insurr will loose out so the bike will be more so to be repaired by the insurer so more will be repaired than written off in the futcher.. hope this helps some one ans sorry for the spelling i went to a teck school when i wa there ..      Last year my chook chaser slid down the road around a corner with me on it and it might have been worth 5k tops. On the insurance papers it was valued at $6700.

Insurance repaired it and the total damage was around 4500k. Although the insurance mob did a great job and so did the bike repairer, i thought it woul have been written off for sure. Go figure.

Yeh I understand my insurer said my bike insured for 24k repairs 12k bike would sell at auction for 13k it's a write off made 1k but thurd party said 70% but they ring 3 wreckers get a price deduct price from total give me the bike and wrecker phone number to sell. My girls sons 883 is insured for 10k and you can't sell em for that Makes no spence to me ... J.D.
