Fuel tap - On or Off

I always leave my fuel tap on. Cos if I had to turn it on and off I would probably forget to turn it on at the start of a ride & would be forever getting the old spluttering as it ran out of fuel wint me fumbling around trying to turn it on in traffic or somewhere down the road with traffic behind me or what ever.

A friend told men that one day it will get me in strife as I will come back to the bike & find that my tank has emptied itself all over the place & of course it will be somewhere where I cannot get fuel easily. What do others do ??????

I was told to turn the fuel tap off because if the float valve in the carb is stuck slightly open fuel could be draining into the sump contaminating and thinning out the oil in the sump without you knowing it. I dont know if this could happen or has happened to anyone but it is good enough reason for me.

Dont worry about forgeting to turn the fuel on, I do it all the time and it stalls before I get off the driveway.

    Cheers.

I've heard stories of fuel filling up the compression chambers and pressurising to bend valves when you try starting it but I have never seen it actually happen.

I always leave mine on and have had no problems to date... Touch wood

Pull up, fuel off, ignition off, kill switch off, got in to a habit and it works for me.

Sometimes I remember to turn the fuel back on! Was pretty embarrasing leaving the opening of the Gates of Heaven with the fuel tap off (harley city) on the night that I bought my bike, fumbled for the tap, fuel on, dirty great sideways up the wet and slippery A'beckett st to the cheer of 50 bikers out the front.

    Big ooops

Never enters my mind to turn the fuel tap off. Sometimes I forget to take the key out of the ignition.

most HDs have a vacuum fuel tap, so it is automatically off when engine not running.

My Iron barrel sporty has leached fuel through the bore and down into the crankcases even with the fuel tap tuned off (obviously didn't seat right and still let fuel through). First hint was when I hit the starter and nothing happened. Took out the plugs and turned it over an you should have seen the shit pour out of the crankcase breather ! What a fucking mess . . .

I always turn the fuel off on the sporty and shovel but as discussed, the Trumpy and Springer have vacuume taps and it is unneccessary.
