Key Replacement

Hi guys, i thought i would share with you my experience recently in going about obtaining replacement keys for my 2006 Vrod.  Having acquired the beast only a matter of months ago (with one key only) i hadnt gotten around to obtaining a spare.

My one and only key was sheered in two when someone (no names!) left the key in the steering lock while moving the bike in the garage.

One bike with one key in two parts = doesnt work.

i rang a few locksmiths and despite them saying YES we can do that, upon presentation of key they said, Oh no not that sort.  I rang one Harley ; dealer close to me and they said, bring the key and bike in and our locksmith can do it!  Response: i could if i could ride it in but alas i cant!  The option was then to take the whole barrel assembly out of bike but this seemed messy to me and i am not the handiest Andy in town.....

In discussing further with same dealer they then suggested they could 'order' replacement keys from Harley in Melbourne. Great!  A week later I got a ph cal from same dealer apologising as Harley no longer carry those replacement keys and can no longer supply.  Most apologetic but only option complete barrel removal etc.

Never one to act hastily i just moaned and groaned until my father suggested Robbo's in Canberra (of all places). He uses them a fair bit (he is Goulburn based).

I rang Robbo's in Canberra to chat and they assured the Keys could be sourced from Harley in the States for $50. They asked for the Key Number (which is stamped on the key under the black rubber grip - this just slides off) and a copy of my rego papers to verify VIN / ownership (scanned and emailed) I paid my $50 and waited.  About 4 weeks later i had two shiny new keys in my hand which fit perfectly.

So, if keys are an issue I am quite sure most Harley Dealers can source them for you from Harley in the States (via Melbourne) for a modest amount.  If they can't - ring Robbo's in Canberra!

    Cheers...........

So they will ship "INTERNATIONALLY" but not to us?

Glad to hear you got it sorted.

4 weeks from the states - they should have paid to send it via post rather than swimming over and back to get it...

Hey Zag, well the process in the end was pretty simple but i am not sure the 'security check' of sending through my rego papers actually did anything other than prove i own a Harley.  i figured if getting the papers from me led to a check of some sort (that is a reconciliation of my VIN against the key code to ensure 1) i was asking for same bike key on papers and 2) i owned that bike then yes i am happy about the security check - but my suspicion is this is not what is done.......

Hey Bonkerz, yeah i can handle the 4 weeks as i think they could have stung me for a lot more (lets face it i was rooted and i imagine i would have paid several hunge for barrel etc by locksmith).  They also came into Melbourne first then processed and sent on to Canberra - from Canberra to me.  Each stop over delaying by say three days minimum. so all in all pretty happy.

Hey AC. Yeah same story, where HD have a distributor they supply only to that distributor.  So the chain went, me to dealer, dealer to HD in Melbourne, HD Melb to HD States then back again.  Cheers.

Thanks Broker, good to hear these sort of things - just never know

Just on the side - the boyz from Robbo's Fyshwick are excellent, not a big crew
but down to earth and top blokes.

Just replaced key and fob. same as you Fat Tony I had to produce my rego papers confirm the vin,it then took three weeks and I had two new keys and a fob. The fob arrived last.

    Key set $30.00 (two keys)

    Smart Security System Fob $50.00

The shop then coded the new fob and removed the lost fob from the sysytem took all of five minutes at no cost.

Over all a painless interaction with the local dealer, which is a first!!

I've had the keys done.. and fob.. keys and fob were cheap enough... but the shop charged me about $150.00 of unauthorised work to code it to the bike (I'd only asked them to purchase the key and fob, nothing else) ..!? They had the bike for over 6 weeks for insurance work.. and I couldn't be bothered arguing with them as they'd stuffed up a bunch of other stuff... and not replaced other damaged parts discussed..!? They whole thing left a very, very bad taste in my mouth..!!!

Guessing I'm not to name em'.. as their a sponsor of this site..!

I want to purchase one of those snazzy Willie G Skull Keys to match the skulls airbrushed on my bike so I hope I don't get messed around like I been reading in these posts.
