Custom Chopper for Learners

     Hey everyone, my name is Dominic.

    I'm considering starting building project of a chopper or at least a kit, but i would most probably end up doing some fabricating on extra or existing bits anyway. My issue is I will have my Learners, depending on whether how long it takes but i have quite a few restrictions.

    I live in Australia, NSW. The restrictions are;

    * Engine Capacity not greater than 660mL

    * Power to Weight ratio not greater than 150 Kilowatts per tonne.

    or any motorcycle thats on the approved RTA List.

    So if i were to get a kit, they come with engines that are too powerful and i can't find ones that are not restricted that will also look nice/fit e.g. the twin heads. What do you guys suggest? I was thinking just buying the rolling chassis and customising whatever i want and then just buying an engine that i find and put it in, but what about the look/fit? Also, are there any important things i need to know about customised bikes and how would a restrictor come into play with the engine?

    Thanks all =D

    my guess is that you are not far from having your P's, and then you will only have a 12 month restriction anyway, i don't think you'll build a bike inside that time frame, so my advise is build it as if you were full licensed.

    This is what you need: http://www.huntermotorcycles.com.au/

    Great service, after market bits (Some great looking custom Hunters out there) excellent pricing on spares and they look great.

    Ok, I don't know exactly how it works in NSW as I am in WA. I have my R-E license (restricted to 250cc in WA) and I am allowed to legally ride my Harley (2011 1200cc Sportster) as long as I am accompanied/shadowed by someone with an R license (I always ride with my partner anyway and he has his full license). If the rules are similar in NSW, and if you were to finish building your bike within 12 months (the period between passing R-E and being allowed to sit for your R class) and it had a larger engine then your are restricted to, than you could always just ride with someone already licensed in the R class until you get your full R license.

    Maybe you should look into this with the RTA?

    Also, you probably won't be on your learners permit very long. I went for my license after just a few lessons and passed first time with no mistakes.

    Thanks everyone for the great replies! I have decided what i am going to do. I am going to buy either a triumph, BSA or honda shadow and modify it/make it into a bobber, while staying in the RTA modification guidelines. I think that's the best option for me, plus i want to have fun modifying haha. Once i've finished, i'll start one from scratch to continually occupy myself.
    There are WAY to many laws in NSW for motorcycles. If only they were the same as WA, then i wouldn't have even posted this! I am jealous of you Cruiser Girl haha!
