Anyone out there have a solution for rusty tanks. I bought brand new tanks, have had them painted but have had rust on the inside continuously. I have cleaned them heaps of times and even used a rust converter but still have the same problem. Its really fine rust and ends up choking up the filters.

hi,    i have to clean bike fuel  & oil tanks all the time ,    do not use any sealer as none will work for ever & cause more prob's latter  down the road ,    i clean  with 100 nuts you have to count  them  & make sure you retrive 100 nut's  not stainlees  so you can fish then out with a magnet post ,              i also use a 2mtr long  light weight dog chain with a  bit of protected wire on the end  as i can warp it around the tank mounting hole  so it won't go down inside  ,     if the tank's bad i use both @ once  just gently roll the tank around  & polish off any shit inside , the r/hand side is hardest  as only a small outlet  i do this in the wash bay with  the solvent/kero  if it's bad  i stick the garden hose full pelt up it's arse  & flush out  any  ( flucking )  paint like sealer's or 1990's  factory undercoat ,          to-day's  petrol eat's them in the long term   i finish of with kero & then petrol  inside ,    nice & clean metal only , if bad put & a  washable inline filter like a 5/16" barrnet / pringel brand  you only ever have to buy 1 for the life of the bike ,  it takes time  but you end up better with no worries , every 6mths jack bike over on side stand so fuel cock is @ the lowest possie  then take the horn off  put a bucket  under & dump fuel cock off the bike with the filler caps off & flush out  @least 1 ltr fuel  & clean the filter on carb model's .                            most painters don't care too much about the inside they just worry about how pertty they work look's                                                                                    i also razor blade around the filler cap gasket area & fuel cock spiggot so the fuel doe's not eat under & lift the paint  & create a bubble the the new paint job , the last job i did was a 1996 EVo hero & i started to fit the tanks in the morning & was still cleaning the gut's-out  @ 5pm that same day        9 hr's of cleaning but what else is there,,                        i could go up the pub but the problem would still be there when got back

Blended fuel is illegal to use in VH registered aircraft because the engine manufacturers wont certifytheir engine s for it ( ie, it is more about who to blame if the engine stops or breaks , CASA is about blame, not safety!) . Also , ethanol causes carby icing to occur at higher air temps and makes all the flight manual information wrong. Most GA and RA pilots are no smarter than tin top drivers and operate on the principle of ' if the books says 10 degrees, then 10 degrees is what I use= monkey see, monkey do) . Some RA aircraft do use blended fuel, 'at the pilots risk' (ie, if the engine stops, it is the pilots fault).

Ethanol will cause corrosion in fuel tanks due to it being a hygroscopic fuel ( ethanol LOVES water) . The best fix for keeping rust at bay in a fuel tank is to always put your bike away with a full fuel tank if you are not going to ride the bike for a week or more. Some fuel preserver is also OK ( did you know that AVGAS does not 'go off' ? 5 year old Avgas is still totally usable, 3 month old pump petrol is 'throw away' or fit for cleaning parts only) .
POR 15 tank sealer works for about 10 years with petrol, not sure about E blended stuff ( my kit car POR15 lined tank is only 10 years old and no lining issues were found over Christmas, but I only use straight petrol in it) . If you POR15 the tank, every year or so you need to empty the tank and leave it open for a day or two to get exposed to air born moisture to rehardened the coating.

as daddyracer said about sealer i hate the stuff had so many blokes use it only to have em call me few yrs later n say can you get my bike sorted
filters bloked full of lil bits of shit and once tank off bike give a swirl with deisel and wat comes out is worse than runnin over a dunny roll with a mower
i got a heap of 1/4 unc stainless nuts about 50 and run them in the tank to get rust n all the other crap off the walls then give a good rinse with deisel then lil bit of hi oct to final clean dont like water in tanks unless gunna weld em i prefer the standard filter in tank them a glass hi flow no far from carb ect even on most hotrod twinkies i run a glass filter oops i meant injected twinkies the amount of shit in fuel an in the petrol stations tanks is unbeleivable got a mate that owns a station an he spends thousands a yr just to keep em clean
only fuel i use in my bikes an cars is caltex it has the lowest ICI aditive so wont carbon up ya valves as much as shell bp mobil ect mobil 2nd on the list (first fatherinlaw was chemist at shell in brissy) an fuck the shit in the unleaded is rediculious

on the fuel companies stuff- yes the fuel all comes from the same three or four refineries in the country, but each lable has it's own cocktail of additives put in at the tanker load points. So there are differences. Over the last 10 years I have not had a car that liked any of the Shell Vpower fuels. Have to agree the Caltex/Mobil fuels give me the best running. I only use 95 too. It costs a few cents more, but as I get a few more kilometres from it per tank load, it sort of balances out.
But the ute runs LPG, gotta love less than half priced fuel that stays at the same price day in, day out!
