started my heritage up to ride home from work this arvo and had no low/hi beam or passing lamps working, everything else was fine.got the bike home and pulled the seat off to check the fuses and sure enough it had a blown fuse, so i replaced the buggered fuse and turned the ignition on and it blew the new fuse straight away so obviously there is a bad earth or a short somewhere. Anyone else had a similar problem ?? any suggestions as to where to start ?
no havent had the switch blocks apart.it is only the headlight and passing lamps that are not working . Tail light, blinkers and dash are fine so iam i right in thinking that the short has to be in the headlight wiring ?? i am definitely not an auto electrician !! :-)
Your not silly Hilly
just got home from work ( 12 hr days )and havent had a chance to have another look at it. bought a handfull of fuses and will start at the the passing lamp wiring and then the headlight wiring and work my way back to the fuse, hopefully it is just a wire that has rubbed through or a bad earth. might get into the shed tommorow night hopefully and see what trouble i can get myself into.;-)
well after a couple of hours last night and most of this afternoon along with about a dozen fuses and nearly a full carton of bundy cans the headlights are working again. I pulled all lights apart, globes out, battery out, checked all wiring from the battery to the headlight, checked all earths, pulled switch blocks apart and it still blew the fuse every time i turned the ignition on. My next step was to start checking each individual wire inside the heatshrink . I started at the left hand switch block and cut open the heatshrink , right where the clutch lever clamps onto the bars there was the very slightest mark where the wiring looked a bit squashed, i cut it open to find one wire that was squashed and bare but could not find where it could have shorted out through the heat shrink. i taped it all up and put in another fuse and fuck me dead there were lights. some times its better to be lucky than it is to be good !
