84 was the last year, be aware some years are better than others 81-82 heads have issues with high lift cams, 78 1/2 up are 80", 70-72 are side oiler cranks, if your not sure ask someone, it will be dificult to find one thats not been messed with so be prepared to be able to identify oil pumps, heads, serial numbers etc, shovels are an absolute bargain and the last of the real rideable classics and in my opinion the last real Harley, you can rebuild the whole thing at home with a few tools an arc welder and a manual
hi scouser, got an 83 fxrs with a shovell, evo bottom end,5 speed, have found it easy to work on,starts every time i want it to,and has been reliable even with me working on it,have made a few mods so goes a little better, prefer a 5 speed better gear range, just my 2 cents worth.
G'day Scouser.
Below is my '78shovel. I have owned it since '95. There are a few things to understand. Anyone can work on a Shovel however "experience" is a big advantage. The average shovel will not go toe to toe with an Evo or Twinkie, will require REGULAR maintenance (like after every decent ride or if ridden daily then a once over every weekend) and will inevitably jettison unnecessary bits every now and then.
BUT
They are very rewarding to ride when in a nice state of tune and their looks shit all over the newer models.
Enter into it with your eyes open, be prepared to commit time and money to it and appreciate it for what it is (a Vintage motorcycle) and it is a very enjoyable experience . . .
It also pays to have a backup in the shed . . . . .
Cheers
Philthy
