Steering head clunk

I've seen some references to this on other posts, but no solution, just "got it fixed".

My 07 Road King Classic makes the occasional clunk from the steering head (I think) when braking or on some bumps. I figure it's the steering head bearings. I've tightened them on previous bikes, but never on a HD. Is there any special technique?

You may need the revised washer kit as well. See my other post on HAMMER.

OK. Thanks. You guys are really helpful.

I've read the manual pages, Scotty, and it says the the nut torque may affect the swing pattern, so I think I should do the following (please comment):

    1. Check the swing pattern.

    2. If OK, then torque the nut as suggested and re-check the swing.

    3. If not OK, then do the adjustment procedure with the special tool, and torque the nut.

    Success!!

I had to adjust the notched nut with my specially made tool, as per instructions. Quite a bit needed, actually. Then I had to back it off again 'cos the 80ft-lbs on the lock nut made it too tight. Now it's fine, no clunks and I get the 3 swings.

Had to buy a 1-1/2" socket, but now I've got it for next time.

Thanks for all of your expert help!!

    Gonzo.

PS Those rubber doughnuts around the front forks - are they the ONLY thing that stops the forks from squashing the wiring loom on full lock??? I'd hate to do a tank-slapper.

    Hmmm.

Ozroder, the last time I did a mono was on my RD350 in the 70s. Don't think I'll try it on the RK.

I agree that "feel" is really important, but HD make the adjustment of the bearings difficult, as I found it quite awkward to get to the notched adjusting nut. Using the "special tool" gave you no feel on the nut itself, so I guess that's why they revert to the Number-of-Swings test.

I agree with Scotty too. - It's Friday - time for a beer.

Any comments on the rubber doughnuts (above)??
