i think there was a known issue with the 06 and 07's and was rectified with the 08's ... but I'm not completely sure on that

bad news .... problem is , It's just one of those 'out of left field ' that happens , I'm sure the bike will run for many years to come , problem free .

Btw ..what was the damage on the bill to have that repaired ?

Yep - I am in the 2009 Softail boat with 24000 on the clock - warranty expires early December this year.

Pearcy gave me a heads up the other day about his problem.

Hey Hilly, I am interested in what ya know mate.  Can you put it in a nutshell so to speak and post it up here?

from memory there has been quite a lot of documentation on this forum and the US one.... both Scotty (bugger that means a lot of info has been pulled) and I think Oz contributed a fair bit..... seach under crank runout.....

I had Scotty check mine when he did a cam change and it was around 3 1/2 thou which is around the amended max and from what forums state is around average.... I've done 60k in my 2007 Street Bob.

Good to get your bike back mate ...

$ 550.00 sounds about right , there would of been oils , gaskit , and the bearing , plus the removel of the chain inside of the primary too , clutch , ect.... Good to hear the bike is running smoother too , they could of adjusted the chain a little , and freash oil may of helped too .

hope thats the last of the repairs for some time

    Hey Hilly,

    Very much appreciated mate.

I am about to have a few more horses installed so the welded SE comp part sounds the extra thing I will get added.

    Cheers.

Hey Steve - can you tell me something - i have problem that might be the same - when stationery and in neutral with i get a grinding noise but if i move the bike back or forward 1/2 meter then the noise either increases or decreases - and noise goes away as soon as i put in gear and hold in clutch - can you tell me if you had same and if so then i'm going looking for same fault - cheers

Had same problem on my last bike 2006 Dyna Wide Glide. First one went at 18 months & 16,000 km's. Fixed under warranty. Had it happen again at 4 years & 47,000 km's. HD paid for parts & i paid for 2 hours labour to fix $200.

Hey Hilly or anyone else on-line who has had to do this - i'm going through the manual trying to work what i need to take off to get to the primary bearing cause i think that just might be the same problem (as Pearcy) that i have on my 03 FXDWG (i'm getting a vibrating grinding noise when in neutral which either gets either louder or goes away if i move bike in neutral forward or backwards and noise goes away when i put it in gear with clutch on - but now also starting to get noise when accelerating in first)

When i get i apart will it be obvious if its the primary bearing that's fucked?

From the manual i think i have to remove the primary case inner housing and i think the manual is saying that i need to also remove the starter motor - but i can't tell if i need to do that - what do you think about starter removal?

Hoping i don't need to touch the transmission - any clue?

In the thread you suggested a Baker 1 piece inner primary bearing - do i get that through HD dealer?

You indicated 2 piece rotor and stator but i can't see them in the manual - are they called something different in the manual?

You suggested replacing compensator - is that the compenstating sprocket? and i can see what the rotor is that you said comes with the SE comp 40274-08

    Any ideas??

    Cheers,

Anyone got any idea if there is any way to work out if its really the primary bearing that is fucked without actually pulling everything apart? Or whether it might be a bearing in clutch assembly that is rooted or something else
It wud be my luck to pull the guts out and find that it's not rooted and then got to fuck around with something else

there is a heap of info on the USA HD Forum - some good suggestions - seems to be a major drama with 2006 dynas inner primary bearing

    http://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-glide-models/322821-2nd-failure-of-my-inner-primary-bearing-7.html

their suggestions seem to me: to use Baker inner primary bearing and get workshop to press my bearing in and out and also replace with welded not bolted stator/rotor
