Noticed the same on my one year old Iron while cleaning it last week. Its the spacer/washer at the bottom of the triple tree, right? Its called instant character  I think the rat rod guys call it "patina"........

I noticed it on the small steel cir-clips on the pegs. Looks crap but ive just learnt to accept it as I ride it everyday and everywhere. Sounds like Cordie has a good idea with the 3m stuff, might give it a crack

My rear shocks and mufflers are rusting after 4 months, I also ride rain or shine so it does get wet... Still, I'm a little surprised by it.

Yes, the wd40 will work. Don't get too wound up about what you read on forums. There is a lot of the negative. Overall, they are great bikes, and very well made. Go for it. TC

Hmm.. Ive just noticed a dribble of rust from out the front of the seat mount on my bike (where the bracket is welded onto the frame) and my 'screamin beagle' mufflers are definitely starting to rust heavily on all of the welds.. little surprised by that, fastners and screws don't worry me..

    but the frame..

I've been riding my Iron everyday for just over a year now from new and i think it took about 2 weeks for some signs of rust showed up around the swinging arm bolts, although i was surprised i've sort of accepted it. I'm sure HD get away with it because a lot of bikes don't see a wet road.

What really pissed me off is that the allen head bolts on the $900 Performance Machine air filter i bought were not stainless and also rusted up pretty quick. $900 and they can't even supply some stainless hardware!!
