FXDF Starter keeps winding.

This afternoon I rode out to work. Just a nice 430 kms run. As I stopped at our boom gate I noticed the starter motor was engaging while the bike was running. So I turned off the bike but as soon as I turn the switch to ignition the bike starts and keeps trying to start.

After a few hours I head back to the bike and it is still doing the same. The only way to stop it winding over is to remove the white plug off the starter.

I'm on nightshift so I will call HD tomorrow but any ideas what going on with the ole girl? Still got 500 kms to do to get home.

It sounds like a short in the starter somewhere. The throw gear is not engaging so that is good, you can discount the switch assy. Something inside the starter or possibly the starter relay is playing up and providing power continuously to the starter. Under warranty so they will fix it. Just you are stuck sort of. Try removing the relay and see if that makes a difference then try tapping the starter motor with something dull when it is spinning. If nothing else at least you can start the bike, disconnect the relay/contact and ride the bike home. Does it throw an electrical code?

This morning I reconnected the plug and it was fine until I started the bike in it just kept trying to start again. No faults on the speedo display. Called Rocky HD now waiting to see what they think.

If it's been trying to start while you have been riding it could stuff the unit real quick. I would think the relay is the culprit too. If you can't fix it at work start it and pull that switch wire off again. Did the bike start ok when you left? Battery wasn't low on voltage? Could be causing the contacts to burn / weld together.

Yeah mate. Got the bike back Friday. It was a relay. She's all good now.
