Swimming, weights, situps etc - anything that strengthens your back/abs. Wait until you don't have back pain to start though...and start slow.

After recent accident (in car) i suffered a bit of lower back and neck pain, but bike is the major mode of transport. I've found ive needed to make a few comprimises to effectivly relieve the pain. Firstly i dont carry as much in my back pack anymore, additionally it now has straps extended so it sits on the seat behind me. Secondly, there is a seat behind me. I prefer to ride with the little solo seat, but it offers no support and i find myself holding on which was tensing my shoulders and sending pain right into the neck...so i ride with the stock set up, i dont like the look of it, but iam not fighting to stay on as it provides just enough support. lastly should be exercise and diet for me too, but anti inflamitories are helping at present.

plans for the future include a 70's styled camel backed seat for support or maybe a 'crazy frank ' seat/guard combo......

thought of kidney belt, but being a fat git means it'll be uncomfortable and will not help with shoulders/neck. good choice of bars is important too, which ever ones you use, make sure they dont leave your arms useless things like pull backs etc. I have flat bars, these work well and am thinking of 16"apes....?

I use a kidney belt on any rides that involve a bit of distance. there cheap enough and they wont do you any harm. I don't suffer back pain from riding.

I have a kidney belt and wear it only on long trips. Doctors say not to wear it all the time as you learn to rely on it. It makes a little bit of difference as you dont get the jarring from bumps as much but is uncomfortable to wear as it has to be on tight to make any difference felt.
I go to gym to keep my weight down and strenghten my core muscles. I also take fish oil and glucosamine tablets. I have been able to manage it for last 20 years as i dont want my lower vertebra knuckles fused.
No easy fix but you will stay fit and live a better quality life. Swimming is the best form of excercice if you have access to a pool.

Mate.. suffered back pain while riding in my 20's, when I was very fit. I'm no longer fit, or young, but found the magical cure to be a "windshield". I know it plays havoc with the "image" thing, but you will not believe just how much pressure is excerted on the lwr back by the parachute effect on the body, especially if you had a problem in that area. (As I had). Along with that, A decent seat, & pegs (with support) located in the right position. If riding long distances, make sure you have the ability to move your feet to a different position, this will help greatly relieve back pain. Good Luck...ride safe.

If I go any distance a kidney belt and a quick release windscreen.........the TENS thing was like being hooked up to a electric fence.......

Having done a trip to Tassie from WA and back I found that I needed to be mindfull of posture, not let my back get too bent and move around a bit from time to time. I also think that if you are a office type worker and don't do much exercise your back is likely to be weaker as well, things like swimming and back strengthening excercises would be a great help.

On the exercise thing I have a mate who hadn't worked for several years on account of his bad back (a Bricklayer). He took up cycling and now his back is as good as new! Strange but true...

I've been using a kidney belt for years .swear by it. Feet too far forward makes you slouch so keeping your back straight is the trick.
