Hey fellas i have a 2011 Iron 883, it has 11" rear shocks at them moment, i had issues with the rear side reflector housing hitting the belt guard over hard bumps, so i adjusted the shock dampener a little and that fixed that, now i have just fitted 1" lowering blocks and looking at the belt guard i am concerned that it will hit the oil tank and a section of the frame, Has anybody had any issues with this??

    Regards Andrew

My first suggestion would be to try the XLForum. Heaps of info about anything technical there mate. Next suggestion is to remove the upper belt guard. That should getbyou another inch or two of clearance? Feel free to ignore everything I say as well. I just went with the 11 inch shocks and left it at that. TC

mine use to do that as well and actully bent the guard a bit. I just pulled the reflector up till it snaped. Becarefull though cause the wiring feeds through it.

If the belt breaks (and I guess they've done thousands of kms and still not broken), presumably the guard is to stop it flicking up and taking off your arm, or bouncing off the road and taking off your pillion's arm.. or your pony tail, or some other critical piece.

I dunno.. I'd be reluctant to take the guard off mine.. but then, I have always been a bit soft (especially around the middle).

hmmm I took mine off on the weekend after finally installing my short shots....looks heaps better !

I figured if the belt broke it would get jammed up inside the cover near the foot peg....optimistic maybe haha

Iv'e snaped Belts before without a gaurd, At low Speed and High.

The broken Belt gets flicked out the back from under the Bike, No chance of hitting anyone

walka - i reckon that's more good luck than anything else. There's no way to know where the belt will be when the break happens, and depending on where that break happens and its relative position on either the drive wheel or the back wheel, it could conceivably be flicked in any direction (including up into your arm pit). That's why the guard is there - I doubt it's for decoration...?

By Law and ADR Standard you only need a Belt Gaurd If you have a Passanger Seat and Pegs, If you bike has a Solo Seat no Gaurd is needed

my 2001 xlh 1200 had 11 inch shocks the swing arm did smack into the frame just under oil tank dented up the belt guard i loved the look but it was just too low I replace them with 12 inch progressive Now its a much better ride handle so much better the pic in my profile is with the 11 s on it
