Anyone got any advice on how to remove the fuel tank on a 2010 Fatboy?
A step by step procedure if possible
I want to run a wire from the battery up to the headlight for a relay. If there is a way I can run a wire from the battery to the headlight without removing the tank, that would be helpful?
Are there any issues with disconnecting the battery??? Error codes or reset codes after hooking the battery back up?
Thanks
Drain as much fuel as possible. Ride until empty or syphon.
Disconnect fuel line. Its a quick disconnect jobbie. Hold hose, lift collar and pull hose down. Has a auto fuel stop so no fuel will spill.
Remove seats. Screw at the back of rear seat and two knurled knobs at the back of the riders seat. Slide seat rearwards and she's off.
One torque screw at the rear of the tank and 14mm bolt and nut at the front of the tank.
Now the tricky bit. You have a fuel tank cross over line under the tank. Do this bit when the bike is cold.
Loosen the clamp on one end of the hose. Either get 2 hoses ready or one to drain fuel to a bottle or container of some sort.
This is what I do........pack a shit load of rags under and around the crossover hose and on the ground under the area. Pull the hose off one end and quickly put you fingers over the hose end and tank outlet. (no matter what you do, you will never be able to drain all the fuel out of the tank before this step).
Somehow have the hose you had reaady to go over the hose you just disconnected and let it drain into the bottle or container. Once drained, change the drain hose over to the the tank outlet and drain this side of the tank. You will spill fuel. thats a given, but thats what all the rags are for.
Once drained both sides of the tank, remove the consol bolt and lift off the consol. There is a wire harness plug to undo or maybe 2. Place the consol over your handle bars out of the way.
Lift the tank off. There is one more wire to diconnect when you lift the tank (fuel gauge) so don't take off until you disconnect.
To diconnect the battery you wil have to disarm the alarm. Have the seat off ready. Locate the main fuse. (big mutha, can't miss it) Turn your ignition on and remove the main fuse immediately.
None of your electronics or programs will be affected.
If anyone has a better method of doing this I'd like to hear. I'm in the market for a quick release fuel crossover at the mo.
I sent an email to M&M to see what they can source in regards to a quick release hose for the tank crossover. Talking to the workshop guys in Darwin about this and they haven't found anything reliable as yet.
I have added a few website links to show what I mean.
The ebay supplier above is charging outrages postage but the picture give an idea of what I’m after
and here is the reply from M&M
QUOTE: "those were popular for a while mate, but there were too many leak issues with them, we don;lt sell them anymore, just as easy to put a one piece braided line, i mean, how much time does it really save???? and on top of that, you have to worry about leaks, just not worth it,"
I put this on 2 days ago and checked now and no leaks.
Total price about $60. Went well with the Tank lift.
