Calling All Motorcycle Enthusiasts - Charley Boorman To Ride Wollongong To Sydney - He Wants You To Join Him!

Celebrity adventurer Charley Boorman, of acclaimed TV series Long Way Down in which he featured with best friend Ewan McGregor, is calling on motorcycle enthusiasts to join him on Tuesday 22nd July when he will ride from Wollongong to Sydney as part of his latest worldwide expedition By Any Means. Charley Boorman is travelling with his good friend and expedition leader, Russ Malkin of Big Earth who is responsible for organising the event and creating the television series.

Boorman has passed through 23 different countries since April on nearly 100 different modes of transport to make it to his final destination Sydney, and this last leg of the journey will surely be an unforgettable one as he travels in a motorcycle convoy. The star of Long Way Down, Race to Dakar and Long Way Round has undertaken similar convoys in the past across London, New York and Cape Town, and now sets his sights on the stunning route between Wollongong and Sydney, which will be filmed as part of the By Any Means six part documentary series that will be shown in Australia on the National Geographic Channel in early 2009.

Speaking ahead of his arrival into Sydney, Charley Boorman said:
"I am calling on all fellow motorcycle enthusiasts to take Tuesday morning off and come with us for the ride between Wollongong and Sydney. This bit, the end of the epic journey, has always been the most exhilarating and spectacular part of all the expeditions I have done, especially because of the sight and camaraderie of all the bikers together. I look forward to see all local motorcyclists there!"

    Route & Timings:
The motorcycle convoy route will follow the coastal road from Wollongong (departing from Flagstaff Hill Park), along the Royal National Park and the express ways towards Ryde, then east towards North Sydney for the finale drive across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The motorcade will come to an end in the Royal Botanical Gardens where there will be a media photo call.

All riders wishing to participate must have their own motorcycles, be fully licensed and insured, and must adhere to current NSW traffic laws. The event will be supervised by the RTA and NSW Police.

Key Timings for the morning of Tuesday 22nd July 2008:

07:30 All riders to congregate at Flagstaff Hill Park Wollongong
08:30 Convoy to depart Flagstaff Hill Park
10:50 Convoy to arrive at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney
11.00 Main Event: Charley Boorman Press Photo Call at the foot of the Fleet Steps (by the Harbour Sea Wall), Royal Botanical Gardens, Sydney

I thought Boorman was acting precious in a few of the doco's, seemed to whinge a lot. They did longer harder rides than I'll ever do but still he annoyed me a bit. I thought he was a bit of a spoiled bratt.

I've changed my mind though, and I'll tell ya why.

    An old workmate of mine got leukemia and has had round after round of Chemotherapy, which has only just held it at bay. Needless to say he's pretty much been through hell the last year. In a short while he's going in for a bone marrow transplant. He and his mates were going to ride around Australia but of course he missed out and wanted his mates to go without him. Off they went keeping in regular contact. The next passage is pasted directly from my mates blog;

I got a phone call from my old friends this morning at 08:00. They are motorcycling around Australia and they wanted me to meet a new friend. So they put this dude on the phone. He said "Hi there, how are you?" in a Pommie accent. Then "It's Charlie Boorman here. I've just met your mates up here in Daley Waters and they told me about you and your lovely family. I just want to wish you well for next week, and I'll be thinking of you over the next month".

What a blast! He seems like a really decent bloke and it certainly was a pick up to get a call from him. Hopefully I can get on a motorbike again one day and see him in the flesh, now that we are good mates.

For someone as famous as him to take the time to give a really sick bloke he doesn't know a call just to cheer him up, well that earns my respect.

    Boof

I believe it will be shown on the Nine (SYD) news tonight, providing there is room in the time slot.

Over 100 bikes accompanied him on his ride up to Sydney from the call I got.
