Just thought I'd share my latest install, for those with bike that have no tacho who wish to install a shift light. First, let me state that my shift light is for use on the 1/4 mile drag strip & it would have little use for daily riding. (Unless of course you are a rev-head who rides it like you stole it). The light I went with is a Shift-I made right here in Aus' by Ecliptech. http://www.ecliptech.com.au/index.ph...=59&Itemid=109 Rather than a simple shift light, the Shift-I has a display of seven lights that give a periferal vision account of how close you are getting to your selected shift point. All seven lights flash when your revs hit your shift point. The beauty of this unit is that I can use the first light to set my launch revs. The revs at which the first light comes on are user selectable, just like the shift point. The unit also gives a reading of voltage before and for a few seconds after starting the engine. To mount the unit on the Sporty Custom I made a little bracket out of polycarbonate sheeting. I had it on hand and it cuts like butter on a little bandsaw & can be cold folded. Wiring was pretty easy after being given some great info from Tony at Ecliptech. I put some heat shrink tubing over all three wires and ran them down through the centre of the riser. To make accessing the wiring harness easier I unbolted the tank and rolled it across to the left without disconnecting the fuel line or vent tube. I connected the ignition wire of the shift light to the orange wire on the bike's harness between the speedo and the 12 pin connector under the tank, just above the coil. The earth wire of the light went to the pure black wire at the same plug on the bike. There are four other black wires running to that 12 pin plug but all those have white printing on them.
The tacho wire of the shift-I was run along the wiring harness back to the ICM. There I joined it to the blue/orange wire at the 12 pin plug, between the ICM and coil. Like I said, pretty easy once you find the location of the wires. Test riding today was an eye opener. If I'd been shifting by ear I'd have short shifted by 500 to 1000 rpm at least half of the time. First gear is the only one that I sometimes had been hitting the rev limiter at the track. Now I'll be able to use my torque band to its fullest on every pass. Watch out big twins.
Thanks Flash , great info and photos , scare those big boys .
Yep, in the bottom pic, the engine is not running, hence the oil light showing.
With the engine off and ignition switched on, the Shift-I acts as a volt metre.
