No spark

It's been very cold in Adelaide so time to do some maintenance on the old girl, so updated the exhaust, Carby,  starter motor, forward controls and front light.  Still have to do the oil cover which Cris sent me about 2 years ago!!

Then wanted to tune the new carby, had the bike running and was able to get the bike to run okay, however it was getting late so left it for the night.

Next night the bike would not start, recharged the battery, and pulled the plugs and no spark.  The system still has the original points so checked the coil, 4 ohms and 11,000 so that is okay, 12v at the bottom coil lead when ignition is on, earth to the top.  I am stuck, I just do not know where to start on this.  The book tells me to pull the lead from the points and check that I have 12v however when I check this there is zero V's here.  In the book it looks like the wiring is that of FX 1977 setup

    Any help would be good,

Run a wire from the battery straight to the coil, if it starts check your wiring / ign switch.

Wish it was that simple Wozza, I have power to the bottom of the coil when switched on. so not sure where to run the power wire to?

No voltage at the points means that there is an open circuit somewhere between the 12 volts you detect at the coil input and the points, either the primary coil winding is kaputzka or a bad conection from coil to points.

    1. make sure that coil is still OK, check continuity and resistance of primary winding.

    2. check connections from coil to points for continuity.

    3. check condenser.

     Hi Troy,

Basic diagram of the area you are looking at. Houli and Rider's tips are on the money. Possibly coil failure or a short somewhere. You mentioned updated front light. Check wiring around there and handlebars for a loose, cut or pinched wire. Points, condenser OK ?.

Check back through any area where you had to take things off to do your updating. you never can tell if a wire has had a bad connection and has become loose enough to cause a problem.

    Cheers,

    Cris.

Yep your spot on Cris!! When I read your response, I remembered I installed the dash as the last thing I did that night. When I took it off, I had a pinched wire under it. I now have spark but no leg left to kick it, so it will have to wait until tomorrow.

Thanks again every one, next step is to install the electronic ignition and oil lines.
